The most important thing is to turn off background app refresh for ALL apps except the ones that matter most like messaging (ie. Whatsapp) and email. Rest you can only have them refresh when you open them. That will make a night and day difference.
Also don't put the screen brightness on max, 70% is a good medium.
I got 3 days battery life from my iPhone 11 Pro the way

so you get instant notifications when someone sends you a message rather than having to manually go into the app to see what you received? Why does a messaging app need background refresh?

I’ve turned very few things off. Almost all Location services are on except for certain apps like Twitter and a few others that don’t need to have it turned on for proper function. Background app refresh is also on for almost everything except, again, for a few apps that don’t need it for proper function. Haven’t had any battery issues except for the new Apple Watches. My wife with the 40mm version can barely make it through one day. My 44 does but my previous series 3 on a prior watchOS could make it through two days with no problems. That’s not possible currently. But the iOS devices so far have been great. For example I turn off location services when I don’t need it and turn off background app refresh
