It’s dumb that there’s outrage over this. But as someone with a background in market research and consumer behavior, this is bad marketing lol. I’m more offended at their bad marketing than using a white model lol.

Free viral exposure in mass media is very good marketing.

Like they say, "there's no such thing as bad exposure".

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that this controversy was intentional. They didn't just pick a white model, they picked the whitest white model that has ever existed in all of history.

Companies do pull controversial stunts, but they try to stay away from race related ones. It’s very risky for the brand image.

Hell, when your name is "forever 21" (and they cater to who they do), what do you expect exactly?

I wouldn't want to be Forever 21. I was much better off at 24. At 38 now, I can feel some desire to go back to 30. Let's say Forever 35 and call it a day.

Wow this one’s really out there. A fictional land popularized by a mega corporation that felt as if a ton of white people in a writing room mashed together their half assed understanding of “Africa”.

I don’t have any real pushback on how dumb this is, other than to remind people that many black Americans have no cultural understanding of where their families came from because that history was brutally stolen from them.

But to emotionally resonate with a corporate fiction enough to be outraged by the consumer goods referencing that? That’s something I really can’t wrap my mind around.

The irony of that twitter post being of course that Wakanda has never been colonized.

This kind of stuff is just annoying. Why does everything have to come down to race? Why can we not be just people?

Outrage over white people wearing a comic book shirt is really over the top. The same people would probably complain if it was black person in the ad, saying that it is stereotyping.

Isn't pointing out that it is a white person kind of racist? If it was a black person in an ad wearing a shirt from a movie with a white majority cast, like Harry Potter for example, and a bunch of silly white people complained, I am sure that it would be labeled as racism.

BTW, this comment is referenced to the people complaining about the ad, not the people I quoted.

Well I’m just talking from a purely marketing standpoint. Marketing almost requires you to stereotype.

Yeah, I understand, my comment wasn't referencing any post on this thread, but just pointing out how it is socially acceptable to point out that it is a white person in the ad, but if it was reversed, it would be considered racist to even mention it if the person making the comment was white.

I have a mixed daughter, and I will one day have to explain why the world is the way it is. Every time I think things are getting better, I see stuff like this that just disappoints me.

So "colonizer" is now a synonym for white?

    As a colonizer male, I'm offended :p

    I can see it now:

    Choose your race/ethnicity:

    Hispanic/Latino
    Black/African American
    Asian American
    Colonizer
    Pacific Islander
    Native American

How about that it is one ugly sweater regardless of who is modeling it?

IMO it's just silly and ridiculous to complain about white model wearing wakanda outfit. So what there are some random twitter keyboard warriors are ticked off? amplifying them and make the whole thing "newsworthy" is even sillier.
