Epic Games today said that the Epic Games Store can now be downloaded on iPhones in Brazil through the Epic Games website. In its announcement, Epic Games complained about the third-party store installation process, which requires nine steps and includes screens warning customers about downloading apps outside of the App Store.

Apple is imposing a 9-step install flow for alternative app stores in Brazil. The additional screens were designed to deter users from downloading alternative app stores and preventing competition. In the EU last year, Apple reduced their installation flow from 15 to 6 steps after facing regulatory pressure. After they made this change, Epic saw a 60% decrease in player drop-off during attempts to install the Epic Games Store. But Apple now has increased the steps in Brazil to thwart competition.
Epic Games also took issue with the fees Apple is able to collect. Apple has a 5% Core Technology Commission on sales of digital goods and services in third-party app stores and apps installed from third-party app stores. Because of the fees, Epic says it is only offering its own games for now. Players can download Fortnite and Rocket League Sideswipe.

Brazilian customers who opt to purchase Fortnite through the Epic Games Store can get 20 percent back in Epic Rewards, an incentivizing bonus not available through the App Store version of Fortnite in Brazil.

Epic Games says it has informed Brazilian regulators "how detrimental the requirements and restrictions are to creating a competitive mobile app ecosystem on iOS."

Apple changed its App Store rules in Brazil in June to comply with regulatory action requiring support for alternative app marketplaces.

Hey, Apple!

Apple claims there is no evidence that allowing developers to direct users to purchase options outside the App Store would result in savings for customers.

I thought I'd let you know as it appears you are unaware 😉

As of now, Fortnite has approximately 110 million monthly active users and around 30 million daily active players worldwide. Additionally, there are about 1,962,813 players who played Fortnite yesterday.

So yeah... I think that would just about count as a few people still play it ! 😀

I was curious to compare that to Roblux... which my three daughters all play.... and google AI says that there are 132,000,000 average daily users. So roughly 70x more people on Roblox. For comparison.

I can't imagine that the fees they fought to try to save would be worth such a significant reduction in user base.

Good to know about this. Lots of changes to app store and its functioning due to various regulations across the world.

You need to regulate to get that 'free market' people always claim to be in favour of. Apple needs a slap on the wrists for doing this and many other things. I love apple products but they've got the most disturbing dark patterns that wall you in when they don't need to do that at all. afraid of competition or something?

Epic Games deserved having a nine step procedure to having their store installed in Brazil as some sort of revenge from King Apple themselves as punishment

Only the weak get “walled in”. Everyone else made a choice to buy and use something they like OR buy something else they like better.

It's steadily dying, fortunately.
Yeah, the reason why they’ve gone back on their promise to “not support it on Apple devices until they get ALL they want” is that, even though it was a small percentage of their total revenue, that small percent might keep them losing money on the Epic Store for another few months.

And, what they’ve won hasn’t given them what they REALLY want, a legal precedent to have their apps on Steam without paying Steam a commission.

what's funny to me is the amount of bias here.
If Apple were creating and running Fortnight then so many here would be all over it as amazing.
Its so funny 😀
Apple is “running Fortnight” in that they have set up an App Store where they want all the transactions to go through it. Epic has also set up an App Store where they want all the transactions to go through it. They’re doing the same thing.

Fair for Epic? Then fair for Apple. Unfair for Apple? Then unfair for Epic.

Fair for Epic BUT unfair for Apple? That is also a way of seeing it. 🙂

You’re comparing apples to oranges. Roblox has about 2-3 million people online at the same time playing, which is about double **** FN has, not 70 times.

Is it only me that finds is rather worry that I posted this post above a few days ago, that list actual factual numbers.
Not an opinion, or a preference, but actual mathematically correct numbers.

And yet a couple of people on this forum posted a Disagree comment.

That's worrying!

How many play on iOS or iPadOS?
