you know what i miss? old-school forums. like, dial-up BBS stuff. screechy modems, WWIV, crappy ASCII "WELCOME TO BLAHBLAH BBS" splash screens, sysops, actually knowing most of the people you were talking to... you know, the good old days.

i'd kill for an old style terminal emulator and a decent place to connect to.

Its not so much where you are as when you are.
    Re: forums of yore

Logging in once a day for your 15 minute allotment. Browsing the forums quickly, playing your 10 moves of crappy text game and logging out so someone else could use the modem.

Those were the days. When 2400 baud was fast.

    i remember upgrading to 2400!

macrumors just hit 30,000 registered members. (congrats to mightee, by the way, if i'm reading the MR member #s correctly.) most of the dinky local boards i frequented had... i dunno, maybe 30 active members? maybe the largest one i posted at had 300.

it was a small thing, a real community; you'd log on to one board and see a bunch of people you knew from another. probably because no one wanted to dial long-distance, so everyone who logged on in a given area was from the same geographic community.

and don't even get me started on ANSI art... i tell ya, these kids today are spoiled rotten with their computer superweb and their streaming quicktime pornography.

I was just looking at the members list and saw there are alot of members form 2000, I thought this place only started in 2001. Well Arn's prfile says he started in 2001.

not sure of the history here myself, maybe some long-timer can fill us in. but i do recall hearing that at some point arn had to re-register his account for technical reasons? or something. do a search, the story's probably around here somewhere.

a quick look at the members lists shows almost 40 people registered today alone. multiply that by, oh, a billion whenever there's a new hardware announcement and the numbers start to get real big...

but more on topic, what i want now is an ANSI skin for macrumors.

That link is great. All kinds of nostalgia.

This is one that hits home that I found in the first article I read:

I still remember the phone number for the local BBS - 3236866. I think it's the support number for a local ISP now.
