Arizona tried this in 2011 when a state senator passed a bill to create a trust fund for donated money. Years later, the legislature gave up, sending the funds to a border county for cameras and other technology after raising around $220,000.

The senator who started the program believed the state could raise $50 million.

We're far more concerned about that Mexican on the street selling fruits/vegetables than we are the homeless panhandlers trying to score drugs and alcohol. We have some funny priorities here.

Crowdfunding, what a great idea. All government programs should crowdfunded, except for the basics—police, defense and justice systems.

DAMN Eric, I am going to invite you to some tamales from the lady in the parking lot at walmart if you keep going this way........... I buy the oranges/cherries/tamales & flowers from street/parking lot vendors, they are at least trying to make an honest living VS just sticking their hand out hoping you feel sorry for them..

Oh man, the tortillas sold by a woman at a bookstore nearby are magical. Her tamales are pretty good—not my favorite, but the tortillas. Mwah!

She loves me because every time I buy tortillas and babble at her in Spanish, she immediately sells several more to gringos who first said no.

And, there's guys who sell honey, mesquite firewood, and yucca-fencing on the corner, and I buy from them too.

Really, you've got to respect the people who hustle.

Or, the jerk who flipped a street-vendor's cart in Los Angeles last year.

We agree 100% here, many come here for the opportunity, not the handouts. I've had tamales and veggies from street vendors that were way better than most restaurants. It's a good honest living and the most authentic Mexican food you'll ever get.

What a novel idea. Rather than through involuntary taxation, this is funding a government program through opt-in contributions from citizens? And if there isn't enough demand to fund the program, then...

DEMAND is there, but it's obvious plenty don't have their mouth where their wallet is :p

Then it doesn't get funded, and no wall.

Now do that for every other government initiative, and force them to compete with everyone else.

    Oh my, my my.

It is indeed a crazy, brave new world we live in.

Every day something like this comes along and I think to myself, "you know arkitect, that wouldn't have happened 20 years ago." (Oh, make that 10, 5, 2… a year?)

    :)

Actually, if this WAS crowdfunded, it would have the opposite effect. No one likes, no one funds it, and better chances of not getting built..

    I'm for it :D

Governments have their own form of crowd funding. It’s called taxation.

A veteran from Florida has set up a GoFundMe page to fund building a southern border wall. Raised $11M so far, target is $1B. It’s sad to see Trump supporters so easily duped. This guy doesn’t say where the money will go. There are no assurances it will get to the federal government much less go to fund a border wall. All he says is he contacted the Trump administration and a lawyer. Sad said sad.

don't see the problem, hell I kind of like it .it's your money , do with it as you see fit and if you are duped well then that is on you, it's no different than passing the collection plate at church.

The fact he has raised $11,640,193 of $1.0B goal as of this post shows just how much Fear, Loathing and Uncertainty #45 and "Republicans" have sown into our once glorious and righteous nation.

    Questions:
Do these people know barriers already exist along almost the entire US/Mex boarder (including the Rio Grand river)?
People entering the US are coming mainly from desperation (safety and/or economics), not because they decide they want to break some law (trespass).
