This article contains a youtube clip of a Fox News group completing mocking the CDN war effort.

It's so blatantly idiotic that I can only believe it's a complete joke. Although I know it can happen, I really can't believe these 4 individuals (and the segments writers), would be so dumb.

Regardless, this has lit quite a fire. Many of my fellow CDNs are livid about the video and what was said. Myself, I'm doing my best to hold my thoughts until I find out if it's truly a joke or if they're serious. If it's a joke, it's in very poor taste, but alot of jokes are of poor taste these days at the expense of a group or individuals so welcome to comedy 2009.

    Fox News mocks military
Outrage after panel rips war effort

By KATHLEEN HARRIS AND ALTHIA RAJ, NATIONAL BUREAU

As Canadians mourn the loss of four more fallen soldiers in Afghanistan, a videotaped segment of an American TV talk show where panelists mock Canadian soldiers as slackers is making the rounds on the Internet.

The five-minute segment, which aired recently on Fox News late-night program Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld and later posted on YouTube.com, features American panelists suggesting Canadian soldiers need time off for "manicures and pedicures."

The item aired after Gen. Andrew Leslie, the Canadian Forces Chief of Land Staff, told a Senate committee the military would need a one-year break from operations after the mission in Afghanistan winds down in 2011.

"The Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white capri pants," Gutfeld said with a sneer.

    UNAWARE OF MISSION

Another panelist Doug Benson said he was unaware Canadian troops were on the ground in Afghanistan.

"I didn't even know they were in the war. I thought that's where you go if you don't want to fight -- you go chill in Canada," he said.

The segment has been posted online (www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcJn5XlbSFk) by an outraged Canadian who titled it "How to Lose Friends and Alienate Countries."

Fox News was not immediately available for comment.

Ottawa-based Conservative commentator Geoff Norquay called the segment "insulting and beneath contempt."

"In a week when we lost four more brave soldiers, Canada deserves better from this so-called news network," he said. "I really wish I subscribed to Fox News so I could cancel it."

Steve Staples, director of the Ottawa-based Rideau Institute, called it a "shameful display" to laugh it up at the expense of families who have lost loved ones.

"The dismissal of Canadian efforts in Afghanistan simply rubs salt in the wounds of Canadian families whose sons and daughters have been injured or killed in the war."

    'STEREOTYPES'

Liberal MP and defence critic Denis Coderre urged Canadians to write to Fox News to protest the panel and said Canada should raise the issue with U.S. President Barack Obama.

"What's a disgrace is that a lot of people are watching this and it is promoting stereotypes," he said.

Calling Canada's military "the best little army in the world," retired Gen. Lewis MacKenzie lambasted the American panelists as "distasteful" and showing an "appalling ignorance."

The bodies of the four fallen Canadian soldiers will be repatriated to Canada today, three days after their deaths in two separate bomb arracks in Afghanistan. Flag-draped caskets of Master Cpl. Scott Vernelli, 28, Cpl. Tyler Crooks, 24, Trooper Jack Bouthillier, 20, and Trooper Corey Joseph Hayes, 22, will arrive at CFB Trenton for a repatriation ceremony.

God knows why they think they can mock Canadian troops when US troops can't even work out friend from foe.

It doesn't matter to me whether it's a joke or not. Either way, the insensitivity and lack of respect displayed for an ally is appalling. If John Stewart can make political satire funny without alienating countries and disrespecting the dead, then these idiots have no excuse.

Colour me appalled that Fox News would even air this. I know they're a ****** network, but this is just staggeringly bad.

Absolutely disgusting. Fox News needs to issue an apology if they are truly as pro-military as they claim. As an American who has family in the military, you have my apology for these fools. Most Americans are wising up to these a**holes.

Yet more proof that Fox News are an abysmal organisation.

It's standard practice for the military to take an extended break between tours.

Will the British Army be their next target?

Plus, what's so unusual about my name? Do they not have any men named Andrew working at their organisation?

    "USA! USA! USA!" F*cking Muppets.

    This surprises anyone?

The thing that much of the American right have learned better than anyone is that the social tactics of the schoolyard bully still work on enough American adults to maintain a following. There is a segment of weak-willed and insecure people who are incapable of forming thoughtful, adult opinions and therefore feel more secure to be presented with a clear "side" they can join that will tell them who to idolize and who to deride if they want to sit at the cool kids' table at lunch. It was right-wing media that finally underestimated the American people sufficiently to fully capitalize on that demographic.

So of course take it personally in the sense that it's an abominable and unjustifiable slur, but don't take it personally in the sense that scattershot insults are part of a desperate gambit to persuade idiots that they're still relevant.

Well there was a parting shot at Europe as a whole

"Isn't Canada doing what most of Europe does anyway which is just rely on USA in case anything bad happens"

I really can't believe this was originally aired on a news channel.

Fox News is not a news channel. It is the propaganda arm for the Republican Party... and this is no metaphor.

Most rational people here figured out a while ago that Fox News wasn't really a news channel.

I've heard a rumour* that all Fox News staff are to sign up as Army Reservists, thus taking up the slack left by the retreating effete army of Socialist Canada.

*It is possible that I might have made this bit up!

    That's exactly it.

As a Canadian, I don't mind taking a joke. I make jokes, and I hope I can take them. It's not even the timing of this segment that was so bad, because perhaps they didn't really plan on this segment airing at the same time as a story of 4 dead Canadian soldiers is aired.

What actually bothers me is that army mocking exists at all, considering we're trying to help. I'm sorry, but from my point of view (and regardless of whether this is true or not), I feel that Canadians are there and haven't pulled our troops out ONLY for the sake of the Americans. I'd rather have troops return home to Canada, but to be diplomatic, we're keeping them in there.

If deep down inside, there really is some shred of belief amongst Americans that the Canadian army is that useless or pointless, then we can just pull our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan. We're not much use anyway. May as well handle things on your own.

Red Eye's host has issued an apology. In part:

However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood

It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize.

Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humorous and ridiculous manner.

I have not seen Red Eye other than this clip, so it may well be that this was simply a very poor judgement call. It doesn't make me any less incensed, but at least this guy recognized his lapse and acted - quite quickly - to respond.

Red Eye is not really considered as news, they don't report news just make fun of it really. The show airs at 3 am so the content is not something that even the general Fox audience would like. I'm not saying that the comments were right, I haven't seen the piece in question but I will say don't judge the show based on this incident.
