Are there any free mac apps that will do this? I can look at my hard drives in snowleopard, but it just shows numbers, it would be nice if I could see a visual like a pie chart of space used & free space, & other stats on my external hard drives.

Something modern that would run on snowleopard & lion would be good.

Search for Daisy Disk. It's what you're looking for except it isn't free.

How do I find out exactly what the "Other" is please? I understand some of it is the OS, but what else is there?

Take a look at DiskInventory X (will not work in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion), OmniDiskSweeper, JDisk Report or GrandPerspective to see where your HDD space went to.

Thanks for the suggestions, do they also show free disk space versus used space? this is one of the main things I was looking for, a pie or graph to give me a visual of used vs free space, so I can see at glance how much space is left on a hard drive, as well as what the space on it is being used for.
