iPod Free mp4 converting programs?

Just got a classic 80gb in black. First time with a video ipod and i'm keen on getting some videos on it. i have a tonne of .mpg, .avi files i would like on my ipod but only mp4 files seem to work.

Can anyone recommend any free programs i can download to convert these files so i can play them?

Free I don't know, sorry, but VisualHub is very, very good, and its far from expensive.
