I just ran across another post implying the U.S. is the freest nation and the rest of the world doesn't qualify to hold our jock when it comes to liberty. I've long thought the claim to be a form of nationalistic myopia, and have been looking to expose it for what it is, a social myth, unfounded by fact and reality.

As evidence, I present the rankings from Freedom House, an organization that has tracked and measured freedom since the 1970's. Their rankings are based on these categories:
    A. ELECTORAL PROCESS (0–12 points)
    B. POLITICAL PLURALISM AND PARTICIPATION (0–16 points)
    C. FUNCTIONING OF GOVERNMENT (0–12 points)
    D. FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND BELIEF (0-16 points)
    E. ASSOCIATIONAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL RIGHTS (0–12 points)
    F. RULE OF LAW (0–16 points)
    G. PERSONAL AUTONOMY AND INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS (0–16 points)

Details on those categories can be found here: https://www.freedomhouse.org/report/freedom-world-2014/methodology#.VGd1bYuFF4N

Below are the 2014 rankings of the top 25 nations (the set of numbers below each country corresponds to the categories listed above, that make up the total score).

    Not #1 ... but #21.

    Feel free to discuss.

For some reason Finland doesn't have a problem with millions of people sneaking into their country by every means possible.

Privacy from state surveillance seems to be off the list. I would imagine that would knock the US and UK even further down the rankings.

So you are saying/implying what exactly? Look at the categories being compared. Freedom is about the rights of citizens, not those sneaking in.

They took privacy of that list, because the people who make those rankings get paid by those who want you to have a certain concept of what "freedom" is.
They always rank scandinavian countries really high ... Tells me to stay the **** away from Finland.

Yes, why acknowledge your shortcomings? Just pretend like they don't exist. Way easier.

Reminds me of your "well the voters don't seem to have a problem with Republicans" comment on the other thread.

So if "privacy" (and that would require some definition) were included, is it your opinion that the U.S. would rocket up that list and be #1?

No. It would be even further down and so would be many of the other countries on that list.

Privacy International used to have a ranking. You might be able to figure why they stopped in 2009 I think.

Seems to me it's mainly the low functioning government and rule of law that's bringing us down. We rate very comparably in the other categories to the top scorers.

Anyone care to intimate why our low functioning government is harming our liberty? And detail what "rule of law" means. The link is flagged as "not trusted" on my iPhone so I'm not going there. If someone has already looked, please share.

They did, do you have any alternate explanation?

Historically Low voter turn out in midterm elections where the voters know the next two years won't make a difference and were just "meh" on the whole voting thing this time around. Not much more to it than that. It's beside the point though. Point is, his comment was as irrelevant in my thread as his comment is in this thread.

It's that "well it's good enough for so and so..." type of mentality...

If people don't vote, can you classify them as voters?

    I don't.

IOW, in this election, republicans did well with the voters.

    a. Sarcasm intended.
    b. I use that same line on Tea Partiers when Obama was elected. (I always think of Steve Miller getting on the 707.)
    c. Who the hell is Ariana Grande?

Jesus, she looks like she's thirteen. Now I feel creepy.

I'd export Nugent to Syria if I could. Plenty of room for him to play with his guns.
