i work for the power research branch for the US army and saw a briefing which is how i got this info
a company came a few days ago and showed us a methanol fuel cell they had developed for small electronics and used it to power an ibook
quite cool that they had a working demo, most companies that come to try to get our money don't have any products
the company plans on commercially producing this fuel cell by 4Q 2005 or 1Q 2006 at a price of less than $500, it would be 1-2 pounds external (they haven't finalized the packaging of the fuel cell yet) to your laptop
runtime would be greater than 10 hours (for the G4 ibook at least) on one catridge of methanol and you could swap a new catridge without shutting down your laptop first
after introducing an external fuel cell for laptops they then want to make one that would replace your battery inside your notebook
sorry but i can't give away what company is producing this
just a heads up that within the next 2 years we'll finally see a replacement for the lithium ion battery, altough initially it will be costly
