This surprises me not.
Though it's typically expected that the opposition party will pick up seats in the mid-terms, I think the stink left behind by George Bush and the Republicans will remain in people's minds for quite some time to come. Voters may not actively like the Democrats, but they know what the alternative is.
I hope what the Democratic party will try to do is field more liberal candidates. We need to get some of the Blue Dogs out of there, or at least overwhelm their numbers, as the current health care debate clearly demonstrates. I'm not sure the party is smart enough to take this tack, but it's what they should do...especially if they want to make President Obama look like an effective leader heading into the 2012 election.
The blue dogs stopping on health care seem to be based on 3 simple facts
1. How is it going to be funded
2. How are future cost going to be controlled
3. Most importantly how to stop runaway rising health care cost?
Until question 3 is answered it is impossible to answer 1 and 2.
Loose the blue dogs and you will turn the US into California and you can see how well that is working out for them. The State is currently at Junk Bond Status in there rating.
