Sorry for the long description, but I thought being thorough would be best:

I launched GarageBand this morning after an evening of successful composition and found that it was not able to open any of my existing projects. Each time I launched the program, it would load, then attempt to open the last open project and crash with a bug submission form.

Actually, GB didn't completely crash... the app was still open, but not able to finish the process of opening a project. It would sit there forever (spinning wait cursor) until I force-quit the program.

I tried reinstalling (after removing all GB-related files) and the same problem persists. With the fresh reinstall, it was able to open the default (new and empty) project, but when I try to open any of my old projects, the same crash mentioned above happens. [This may be unrelated, but GB is also now adding two keyboard tracks to new projects instead of just the default one it was before.]

I did play around with making my own loops (AppleLoops SDK), but this never resulted in any crashes. I was even able to shut down and restart the computer without any problems until this morning. I have not installed any new software (except he SDK listed above), so I'm not sure what could be the problem. I have not experienced any other program crashes lately that I can remember.

I have run DiskUtility and repaired permissions and run a disk check (no problems). This did not fix the problem. I'm close to wiping a spare volume, installing 10.3 and GB and seeing if I can open the old projects from there.

I'm using the latest version of 10.3 on a 933MHz G4 with 512MB of RAM.

Does anyone have any idea what might have caused this and whether my old projects are dead?

I had a similar problem. I just deleted my pref. file and temporarily moved the last file I was working on to my Desktop. GB started fine and then I just moved my file back and opened it using GB.

I don't know what caused it to crash, but this seemed to make it work again.

    I hope this helps some...

After noticing other oddities in my system, I decided to wipe another partition clean and install X and iLife from scratch to see if I could recover the old sessions. It worked.

Lord knows what was causing my problems, but at least things are working better now.

    Same crashing problem

I am having the same crashing problem described in this thread. I installed TC SparkME earlier in the day and then started gb later that day and began experiencing this crashing problem. I went and wiped out the files I could find from the Sparkme program--I think I got them all. One strange thing when I installed the Spark program was that it asked me if I wanted it to create a preference file -- odd I thought at the time but did it. I am not even sure that the SparkMe program is causing the problem since others are having it under different circumstances. Anyway, I did not quite understand the explanation of deleting the file.pref. Could you be a bit more explicit. I am not super familiar with the Panther OS.

GB crashes when I try to open my files.

Garageband was crashing everytime I tried to change my audio preferences. It said it was initializing and then it just popped up the "Crash Feedback" window.

Interestingly, Garageband didn't quit all the way. It just kind of hung there mid crash. I had to do a force quit.

I've tried reinstalling it. Didn't help.
I've tried deleting the preference file. Didn't help.
I've tried zapping the pram. Didn't help.

I have got it to the point that I can create new songs, but my project files that were created earlier, will not open. They crash the application when I try to open them.

Is there a way to resurrect these files? I have a lot of time invested in a few of them and don't want to start over from scratch. Arrrg. :(

Oh...and another weird thing that is now happening. Everytime I create a new song, it creates 2 default tracks. One grand piano and one "audio" with an accordian icon. If I save that newly created file, close it, and reopen it, it adds a second audio track with the accordian. Strange.

    Help? Please.... :)

    Where do YOU live?
Did anyone try opening the project files on a different computer with GarageBand, to test whether it's GB or a corrupt project file?
