With details lacking...this ZDNet article provides some leaked details of the upcoming NVidia GeForce 4 cards. The 'MX' is NVidia's lower-performance model:

The MX line is likely to include three models, the 460, the 440 and the 420, with a Ti 4600 and a Ti 4400 also appearing, according to reports. The Ti moniker refers to Titanium, the name that Nvidia coined in 2001 to refer to its high-end versions of a particular graphics processor line.

this article from Silicon Strategies briefly touches on the newly announced MPC7455 SOI PPC chip announced today by Motorola, running at 1-GHz. Of interest, a slower, lower-power version is sampling at 800MHz.

The 1GHz chip has a suggested retail price of $295 in quantities of 10,000.

800 mhz, lower power ???

Sounds like the new chip for our beautiful TiBooks!

I'd expect maybe around March?

It's nice how Apple is spreading out our hopes now. we constantly have something to look forward to!

Only thing Apple needs to do now is let iDVD work with external DVD-R drives! I want my next Mac to have DVD burning capabilities. BUT: I don't want a PowerMac because of the noisy fan (I have a Cube and a PowerBook G3), I don't want a new iMac because of the low-res screen (1024x768 just isn't big enough for OS X!), I don't want a new PBG4 because there's no iDVD support!

Come on Apple! I am so ready to upgrade, Apple just doesn't have anything I want!

Uh... Ok. 1024x768 is TINY! That's why I run it constantly on my G4 tower! Hmm.. I don't understand what the big deal is.. 1024x768 is HUGE for most tasks an iMac consumer would need.

"iMac consumer"? LOL

iMac consumer? LOL! you people talk about people that have iMacs like there a lower lifeform! the truth is EVERY COMPUTER APPLE SELL IS JUST THAT, A COMPUTER! just because some one owns a iMac dosent mean there not as much of a macer as you or anyone else! a computer is a computer! an iMac (new one) can run just about any program a "pro" can possably want to use!
example:
Photoshop
Maya
FCP 3
DVD studio Pro
After effects
Bryce
Poser
Raydream studio
...........................................and so on and so forth!

And yes your right 1024*768 is plenty for the average person, in fact in the old 12.1" iBook its even to much you can bairly read the screen!

Geforce 4?? where?

When I saw the fact that the Geforce 4 was going to be bundled in the new Macs, I thought, wow sounds cool.. but, uh-0h.. there's that 'MX' tag on the end - read 'low-end' version..

I guess thats fine as a base level display adapter that will still give you reasonable performance for the newer games coming out, but I have tried to find out more about the Geforce 4, and can find nothing of it on Nvidia's website, or indeed just about any other PC-Based/ 3D/games website!?!? Normally these places are dripping with news about forthcoming products.. or have I missed something somewhere..

You would think Apple/Nvidia might be making more of this.. there is an announcement on Nvidia's page about "built-in to every new Mac..blah blah" but it doesn't mention the GeForce 4 anywhere, I thought Apple would have made more of this coup with Nvidia...beating all the PC manufacturer's to the GeForce 4. Try doing a search on Nvidia for Geforce 4 - squat..

Anyone know where any detailed information is on this product? I feel I may be just pissing in the wind as what I've read so far indicates it will not be officially announced by Nvidia until beginning of February... anyone??

I am really looking forward to dumping my dual 1Ghz P-III with Geforce 2 Pro (games machine) for a nice shiny new Dual G5 when they come out, but I don't want an 'MX' card in it, I want the full monty... :) sadly my current Mac, upgraded G3-400 with voodoo 2 doesnt cut it for Quake 3 Arena, anymore (if ever!) which is why I built the PC for about £500 UK.. Just to play quake...how sad.... ;) I use my mac for all things creative and it far outshines my win2k for useability, slickness and has the BEST applications for audio production, period... sorry for rambling.. :)

Apple would be wise to use these chips (7455 and 7445) as long as they meet their needs. They're cheap. And there are other customers for these chips (namely Ericsson). That means that Motorola will be compelled to advance the speeds in a more timely manner.

Plus, these chips should be in no short supply and they should be rather cheap as the demand should be high. All in all, this would be a great chip for Apple to use for the iMac and iBooks.

As long as it meets Apple's needs.

Addendum ---

Can someone comfirm whether the new G4 dual-1ghz uses the 7455 PPC? Macminute is reporting that it is, but none of Motorola's Press Releases say anything about Apple in regards to their new PPC chips.

William Swearingen, Director of Strategic Communications at Motorola, told MacCentral that the G4s driving Apple's new G4 mini-tower systems are indeed the long anticipated Apollo processors.
