I'm not buying anything until the Back to School Promotion starts but I'm looking at buying the 15" i7 with a 500GB 7200rpm HD and a HiRes Glossy Screen. Does Apple only stock base models or will they carry this in their store? I'll end up calling when the BTS promo starts just to double check if they have it in stock, but I figured I'd ask here first.

I believe that they have only basic models at Apple stores.. If you upgrade from the basic models, you can order them only by online, which makes me unhappy.

I am waiting for the Back to School Promotion, too...

Ya that's what I was afraid of. I'd much rather go over to an Apple Store, buy it there, open it at the Genius Bar and examine it for defects while I'm still at the store. Now if I get a defective one I'll have to send it back and wait for a new one. I thought they carried Hi-Res screen models though, so is that considered an upgrade?

I've been stalking the MBP 17" at the Apple Store... according to the "Specialist" they ONLY carry the i7 + matte screen in the 17" variety, not the i5 or glossy screen... which is fine b/c I want i7+matte and the ability to enter, grab, check, pay, leave, play. In that order.
