Hi folks! I need your help. Pretty please.

If you don’t want to read my long post, my question is “Why should I get the 1tb 12.9" iPad with 16gb of ram vs the 512gb with 8gb of ram I currently have?” I‘m more wanting your help with the reasons concerned with the extra ram, not the extra storage. What reasons made you choose the 1tb with more ram? Or why did You decide against it?

I’ve had several iPads throughout the years. My last one was the 2017 256gb 10.5" iPad Pro. I would still have it but like many other users of that model, the touch screen stopped working on it. Everything else was fine with it, but the touchscreen issue was enough to make me want to get rid of it. I usually sell my old Apple products online, but I didn’t want to be a jerk and sell this one to somebody because it didn’t function properly. While looking at the new iPads on Apple’s website, I noticed you can trade your old one in. I looked up the value and they offered me $280 for it. Ok, I’m upgrading for sure.

I originally purchased the new 11" 5G model with 512gb. I pay for the 2tb iCloud storage every month, but wanted to have some extra space this time around so I can store more internally. I brought the iPad home and loved it, but I kept looking at the display on the 12.9" model and ended up talking myself into upgrading to that size. I definitely would’ve kept the 11" if it had the display that the 12.9" has because 11" was the perfect size and weight for me. It will probably be on next year’s 11" model but I could not wait until then.

I got the 12.9" 5G model and it has taken some time to get used to the size and weight difference, but I really like it. I had to purchase new mounts and stands because it would not fit in any of my old ones. That is frustrating, but I’ll survive. I still can’t find one sturdy enough to hold the weight in my car and on the gooseneck mounted to my bed headboard. The display is beautiful. I really like this thing.

Unfortunately I am now questioning my decision on getting the 512gb with 8gb of ram vs the 1tb with 16gb. This is where I am hoping for some guidance from you all. My return period is almost gone so I need to decide fast. I like to future proof my purchases so I can keep them for a while longer. I know that right now Apple has the ram locked to about 5gb of usage, no matter what model you get. I also know that there really isn’t any apps (for now) that take advantage or need the extra ram that the 1tb comes with. I would probably never run anything that would require the extra ram… or would I?

What happens when Apple finally unlocks the ram and developers can take advantage of the full 16gb? What will I miss out on because I got the 8gb instead of the 16gb? What reasons made you choose the 1tb with more ram? Or why did You decide against it?

I really don’t run any programs that require the extra ram. I don’t do video or photo editing on this thing, but that could change. I like the idea of editing photos with the Apple Pencil and will definitely be getting the 3rd generation when it is announced. It would be nice to have the extra storage so I could keep hard copies of my videos and photos on the iPad so I wouldn’t have to wait for them to load from the iCloud. Sometimes it’s slow to load.

The main question is about the ram. Sell me on upgrading to 16gb… or not.

Thanks!

Full recycle on iPads runs around 400-500 days. That is as much as it is worth future proofing. As the new ones usually include features not found on the previous model.

Computers are tools, if your tool is working for what you need, there is no reason to over analyze what you need two years from now, as the platform will change by then.

It is my understanding the 1TB drives requires more RAM to support the swapping, so there is likely not a memory improvement allocated for applications.

Also keep in mind the Air and lowest models of iPads run the same software, so depending on what applications you are using, will determine what hardware will result in the best usage of that app.

You have answered you own question here, 8GB of RAM is more then enough for the iPad and will last you many years. The 8GB is more then capable of video and picture editing. I currently have the 12.9 M1 256gb with 8GB and i don’t have any problems editing photos (including RAW).

If you want the 16GB and the 1TB then go for it but you are not really going to notice much of a difference with your usage as you described above.

If you have not seen this video already it maybe worth a watch 😀

The 1TB or 2TB versions automatically come with 16GB RAM, it isn't a choice (I know you already realize this), so it seems to me that the decision is not solely whether or not you feel the additional RAM will be beneficial, but do you need the additional storage?

It is $400 more but you don't seem to be sensitive to price, personally I would make the decision more on how much storage I wanted rather than how much RAM.

The video posted bo @hammie14 is very helpful, and concludes that the RAM doesn't make a huge difference.

Either way you're getting an awesome iPad, I think!

Exactly this!

I love my iPad Pro, its not a laptop replacement but its a flipping awesome device!
Oh I love mine too!

Right now I’m kinda leaning towards getting the overpriced extra storage. Still undecided because I’m horrible lol.

I think you want us to all agree with the 16 gb so that you can just sleep better at night.

So, do it and sleep well. :p

Why wait for a gen 3 Apple Pencil? Gen 2 is great.
Because I have a gen 1 pencil which is now useless because Apple is rude lol, and it doesn’t make sense to buy the 2 if the gen 3 might be announced next month. It would ruin me lol

I would have gone for 16GB RAM model if I knew that within this year Apple will allow macOS apps on M1 iPad Pros, it would be then my all in one/2 in 1 computing device. Or if I knew that I will be working on currently available ipadOS apps that consume lots of resources, probably Luma Fusion comes to mind, which I dont use and I dont know what other "heavy" apps are out there for an iPad.
But since, neither is the case at the moment, I went for 8GB RAM model, plenty fast.

That’s what I’m worried about. What does Apple have up its sleeve? They would not put that much ram in there for no reason. I hate the way this company harasses their loyal customers with their secrets and the way they do some things.

Same for me. I waited till WWDC to see what Apple would announce for iOS 15. Since nothing special was announced, I ordered the 8GB version.

If Apple decides to launch Logic Pro, Xcode, Final Cut Pro in a few years, then there will be much more powerful iPad Pro’s on the market by then. So no point in future proofing.

I would only need 16GB to stop apps reloading in the background basically :p

This is a very real possibility. One pattern I’ve found from Apple is that they’ll do a major internal upgrade with the old body, but then a major external upgrade with a new body the next year. So, because we had the M1 this year, I can see a new body next year and an incremental chip upgrade. This might constitute a new Pencil design.

Yeah I’ve read some rumors and there are people out there who think that something will be announced this year. Also, for the second week in a row Best Buy has the current 2nd gen pencil on sale for $99 which makes me think that the rumors could be true. Fingers crossed!

My take is, if you have to ask, you probably are fine with 8.

I use it for design and work, the 8Gb version is more than enough for me. Nothing really requires 16 gb and probably won't for the device life.

I stopped thinking about it after WWDC where it was clear that theres nothing special coming, probably marketing just to intice people to get 1Tb model: "Hey, it also comes with 16GB o'RAM!"...
I wouldnt sweat it, as UBS28 said, if there comes ipadOS version with macOS app support, by that time our M1 iPads wont be the latest and greatest anymore and there will be even more powerful, redesigned and improved iPad Pro's available, perhaps with 15h+ battery life? Who knows, I wouldnt mind iPad Pro to rival some of the M1/future M silicon Macbooks in this regard.
So, in the end, I decided to save my money for later upgrades down the road.

I wouldn’t read anything into this at this stage. Of course there’s no macOS coming to iPad. They’d have shouted it from the rooftops if there was anything additional that marketing could have used.

Since every iPad so far has only supported one version of Apple Pencil that will likely be the same going forward. Version 3 will only work with new iPads revealed at that time- the accessories are Apple’s chance for big extra profit.

It would be strange to launch a new Pencil without a new iPad Pro alongside it. The first and second gen Pencils launched alongside the new hardware.
I wonder what kind of new functionality they’d add to a new pencil.
