I have a 3G iPhone I bought in Jan. 09 and I noticed this morning a dead pixel on the display. I called Apple up and they said I need to take it to an Apple Store this weekend and get it replaced. Will they let me pay the $100 difference and upgrade to a 3GS?

If it had been within 14 days if purchase then yes. Since you bought it in January, then it's unlikely.

I'm actually surprised that they are going to replace the screen. I was under the impression that dead pixels would not be covered by the warranty unless you had lots of them.

They'll give you a 3GS for free. Because - you know - they give them out like candy just for asking. It's the new Apple good-will program!

No. You'll walk in with a 3G and walk out with a 3G. If you want a 3GS, you'll have to get one the normal way.

    what $100 difference?

you walk in with an in-warranty broken 3G, and walk out with a working 3G. (they will give you a new refurb)

the 3GS doesn't come into this transaction in any way. what $100 are you even talking about?

you want to upgrade, fine... that'll be what, $500? :D

i went in to the apple store on sunday as i was passing (usually get drawn in coz of all the shiny shiny anyway!) and i'd noticed 1 dead pixel a few days ago, now you could only see it in a certain light so i wasnt too bothered, i noticed tho that there was a space at the genius bar so i booked in, the genius took a look and said that it has to be 3 pixels or more before they can do anything, he also ran a diagnostic and informed me that the apps were crashing a lot and THAT was a reason for a refurb - i didn't argue and i have a nice shiny iphone again!!!! Was secretly hoping they'd messed up the boxes and gave me a 3GS but they didn't.

I'd assume that in a while from now that Apple Stores will run out of 16GB iPhone 3G replacements, then they would probably give you an iPhone 3GS. They'll probably just replace your display, OP, unless you have other problems with your iPhone.

WRONG! They will never run out as long as people keep returning 3G iPhones for defects. Those defective phones get repaired and then they are handed out as refurbs for the next person who brings in a defective phone.

Why do you think people who still have the original iPhone are still getting original iPhones to this day? They will never run out.

They still have warranty replacements for the original iPhone, so don't expect the 3G to run out.

My friend's original iPhone wasn't working correctly. When he took it to the Apple Store (seven months after the iPhone 3G came out), they gave him an iPhone 3G. That's the only person that I know that had their iPhone replaced after the next generation model was released, so you do have a decent chance of getting the newer model. If it's an 8GB iPhone 3G, you'll probably get a refurbished/new iPhone 3G replacement since Apple still sells it.

If he's the only person you know of that this happened to and no one here knows anyone that this has happened, how would it be a "decent" chance for the OP? more like slim to none.
