A relatives birthday is coming up and they for the longest time have expressed interest in the Apple Watch but they’ve only ever owned an iPad.

I’m sure they’ve owned the original iPad Air from 2012 and now they’re using the 3rd gen 10.5 inch iPad Air.

They a have Samsung phone if that matters.

I’d probably get them the SE2 or the 7.

Having an ipad is not enough... They'll need an iphone to set it up... Or someone with an iphone to set them up as a family member watch... but I'm not sure if that is geared towards kids only you would have to look it up.

Don't. Does not pair to an iPad.

The Apple Watch is still an extension of the iPhone for the most part. No way to set it up without one, and the watch's battery will not last all day running on wifi, which he'll have to do without the phone's bluetooth connection.

I hear you guys. Thank you.

Won't be getting them an Apple Watch until I can convert them to iPhone.

Get them a watch and pair it with an older used iPhone. Tell them the iPhone is just for controlling the watch. I think you'd have about a fifty-fifty chance they'd get converted to iPhone while playing around with their watch. ;p

Same thing here really - mum has an android phone (yeah I know) and an iPad - If I go round there can I just set her up using Family Sharing via my iphone ? I presume once its set up initially it will function like any normal apple watch ?

Just reading this -

Seems to imply it has to be a cellular watch too...anyone here any more knowledge ?

Actually looks a faff now if both the phone and watch need a cellular plan so probably not feasible to be honest.

Not exactly “like any normal Apple Watch.” There are a lot of things the watch won’t do in family mode - including Apple Pay, ECG, sleep tracking, HomeKit, and more. You have the right page of the user guide, just be sure to read all of it - “Availability of features and apps” details this.

I think after reading it all its a non starter because it has to be cellular - mum was after a device with decent fall detection so perhaps the new google watch....
