I turn on my iPod Touch and slide to activate, and I get a picture showing the iPod connected to iTunes. What does thie mean?

Does the graphic look like this?:

Yes; why did this graphic appear?

Either you were updating your iPod Touch (or restoring) and unplugged it, you somehow managed to push the buttons on your iPod percisely to get it into DFU mode, or something else very rare that I have no clue about.

Plug it into iTunes just like it asked and restore it.

I was not doing anything. I just took it out of my pocket, turned it on, and got the itunes graphic.
I did plug into my computer and iTunes, and things got fixed. but I would be in big trouble if I were away from my home computer and my iPod didn't work.
