It's hearing safe but no where near as quiet as Hollywood would have you believe.
I need to get one for my hunting rifle, but the mad rush before the 41F decision I have a better chance of the Hearing Protection Act passing before I would even get my tax stamp back.

Wut! In all those Hollywood movies, a silencer makes guns quieter than a cap gun. I supposed real computers don't make whirling sounds or have flashing lights.o_O:p:D

Explosions don't look nearly as cool in real life either. Just dirt and dust getting kicked up. :(

And what's with all the sparks flying from bullets hitting cars. They don't do that.

What would be the point. Should I just verbally make gun sounds while he come in my back bedroom window?

Oh man really, so those silencers in movies that makes that cool little clapping sound doesn't exist? Or is that only available to military, navy seals etc...

The silencers on the ends of rifles you see the military using are still so loud that, believe it or not, you'd still want to be wearing hearing protection.

The falsehood in movies is that it makes a little tweet tweet sound. In actuality, it IS a loud slap sound. BUT, you can use subsonic ammunition to make it quieter than a .22.

The impact will take it from a rifle round to more the lethality of a .45, but in close quarters, if you are trying to stay pretty damn quiet, it works more than well enough.

Anyway! When I shoot my guns, after every round, I just go "SH!".

I hate Hollywood when it lies about guns. I'm sure many people want silencers banned due to the movies.

I'll agree with this, most likely it's ignorance on the subject matter. Not trying to defend Hollywood but check out some Youtube vids with suppressors. Cameras do not do a good job of realistically portraying sound. Even realistic Youtube vids make them sound quieter than they are in person.

It's really difficult to capture a high-dynamic range event like a gunshot accurately and still be able to provide a sense of scale. Most video cameras with automatic gain control will overload long before the peak of the pressure wave is captured. A good comparison for the layperson is a suppressed pistol is about the same in tone and volume to a high-power nail gun shooting a 16 penny nail. Most suppressors at an arms length (1M) will reduce the impulse to between 120dBA and 140dBA, an unsuppressed gunshot will be between 135dBA and 160dBA. A normal rock concert will be between 95-110dBA in the audience, at this level long term exposure can result in permanent hearing damage.

For reference, +3dB = doubling in energy, +10dB = perceived doubling in volume.

Suppressors are over-the-counter in some northern European countries, and are recommended by the French government as a courtesy to local residents and/or other hunters. Minimal controls in England.

According to a field agent of the BATFE, the Hearing Protection Act will likely be enacted, making it an over-the-counter item in the US.
