Thanks for any help. I've seen people mention on here that they've managed to reserve a phone for in store pickup at Apple despite having one on pre-order from Apple. I'm just curious how to go about doing this.

My phone is pre-ordered through Apple on AT&T Next and I don't expect it to ship for at least week. I'm concerned that when a phone comes up as available for pickup, I won't be able to reserve it under the AT&T Next plan and will have to pay full price, since I have one already reserved for Next.

Has anybody dealt with this? What's the best way to handle it? Is it possible to reserve the phone for in store pickup by paying in full, then switch it to AT&T Next before physically taking the phone from Apple? I'm a bit hesitant to cancel my order before reserving it, as who knows if I'll be quick enough to get it.

Thanks!

On another note, I noticed last night that a store near me had a jet black 128gb 7+ available. Maybe we'll start seeing those in stock at more stores!

I ordered iPhone 7 Plus (Silver, 128GB) using AT&T Next on 9/16 with an estimated arrival of 10/11 - 10/17. I noticed (using iStock website) that the one I ordered was available at Apple Stores. Last night I canceled my order. It takes a few minutes for the cancellation to register (at first Apple's website said I could only pay the full price, then waiting a minute or two, it allowed me to purchase/reserve using AT&T Next option). I have reserved it for this evening, however, it still shows up at "Processing Items". Hopefully that will change prior to me getting to the store at the Check-In time I selected.

Interesting. So you took that leap of faith and cancelled your pre-order! I'm holding out for a 128 black or jet black plus. By the time I got to Apple's site from the iStock site last night, the jet black I had seen as available was no longer available on apple's reserve and pickup or IUP site. That's why I'm hesitant to cancel my pre-order and wait a few minutes.

I have heard that the best times to do this are early in the morning or early in the afternoon (as some get additional stock in the afternoon).

It was certainly a "leap of faith" as the phone I wanted was available at one location, but after I canceled it was no longer available. Fortunately it was at a nearby location (a few miles farther).

Yikes. Yeah, I don't think I want to take that risk. I've been on hold with Apple chat all morning hoping to ask them about this exact thing, but it's been an hour and I'm still waiting.

I wonder if I could just pay in full then switch the payment plan in-store.

I had an online order and saw the same phone at my local Apple Store. I didn't cancel the other phone before getting the in store one and for some reason there was no problem. I didn't want to cancell before the phone was in my hands.

Using AT&T, it would not allow me to purchase another phone on the same line while another was pending. I guess I could have paid full price outright, but did not want to.

Did you reserve it for in-store pick up, or just go to the store and get lucky? If you reserved for pickup, what payment option did you choose? Also, had you reserved yours under AT&T Next or similar carrier plan? Thanks for any insight!

Just reserve as pay in full, and switch to Next in store. Cancel when your reservation is confirmed. Not complicated.

I had an order on apple.com as well with 2-3 weeks shipping timeframe. I saw that they the Apple Store was going to have some IP7+ phones in stock with the size and color that i wanted. So i cancelled my online order and after about 5 minutes i had the opportunity to buy on apple.com with the pick-up option. Once i did it immediatly deducted the funds from my account and 20 mins later got an email saying my phone would be ready to pickup with the appointment scheduled. So yes quick and easy

Can you confirm that you've done this? That was my thought as well, but I heard a while back that someone tried to do this and they pushed the phone back into the inventory system and they lost it.

I saw it online and reserved. Then noticed it was a reservation for "upgrade". I just wanted to buy outright and went ahead anyway to try my luck. Went to the store (remember I still haven't cancelled my online order) and was seen immediately. Told them I wanted to buy the phone and guy said I had to at least try to see if i qualified for an upgrade. I said sure but wanted to do it on my AMEX and it worked. So I took/bought it that way. If I hadn't qualified I would have been able to purchase it outright. I just wanted an unlocked phone. I was surprised it went through as I thought the online order would throw a spanner in the works as I was using the same telephone number on both. When online and trying to buy other phones previously it would not let me continue if I had a phone on order. As for doing this on attnext, I say try it. Apple are there to sell phones, if they have it they'll sell it to you. You can always cancell in front of them if they guarantee to sell phone to you there and then.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I think that's what I'll do - provided I can find the model I want before my order enters "prepare for shipment." I'll just keep my preorder then go to the store and cancel it in front of them.

I ordered through Apple and their purchase system ties in with the carrier's plans, in my case, AT&T. I ordered a black plus 128 gig through the Next program. I spoke to AT&T earlier that day and they confirmed there was no problem with that. I just made sure my installment payments were completed that would allow me an upgrade. But the wait was 2-3 weeks. Yesterday I was able to make a reservation for an AT&T gold 128 gig plus at a local Apple store. When I got there I told the sales guy what I wanted to do. So we cancelled the online order, waited 2 or 3 minutes for the change to clear and then bought the gold phone under AT&T's Next program. I put $350 down to keep my payments at $21/month....I had figured this out in advance with AT&T. I wanted to keep my monthly payments the same that I had for the Note 5. Now, all I need to do make sure I've migrated all I need from the Note 5 to the iPhone and tomorrow I'll go to an AT&T store and give them the Note 5 for them to refurbish and resell. It's in mint condition so I have no doubt it will exceed their 'normal use' wear and tear criteria.

Checked on istocknow.com, found two 7+ (same i had pre-ordered) in two of my local stores. Setup reservation for one through apple upgrade, got to store and paid in full. The other was able to paid for online regular purchase through my carrier. Proceeded to cancelling my order for two online which was scheduled for Oct 4-10.

Couldn't be happier.

I got iPhone 7 on launch after originally pre ordering. Canceled pre order in store and it went through within minutes. Using istocklive found an iPhone 7 plus. Return 7 as point of sale and went to apple to pick up via reservation. Confirmed with att and apple that the same promo credit for swapping 6+ is being applied despite switching from 7 to 7+. Hope this helps.

I'm confused - why did you have to give them your Note? I just reserved one for pick-up through the IUP. I'm not currently on IUP, and plan on asking them to switch it to AT&T Next. I have no intention of giving them my fully-paid off iPhone 6. I've already lined up a $265 offer for it.

Mine was not paid off. I thought about paying it off and selling it. But the residual value is just a bit below what I'm seeing on Craig's list and I figured it was not worth the bother. iPhones have a much greater resale value. That phone I probably will pay off and sell myself because I don't think AT&T gives you enough residual value credit.

Oh, got it. I don't currently have AT&T Next but want to switch to it. How exactly did the process work when you switched the in store pickup order to AT&T Next? I just spoke with an Apple rep who said that the only way they could do it is to cancel the order entirely, kick it back out to the main inventory system, then place an order under AT&T Next. He told me that I'd be at risk of someone else snatching it up before completing the order... Then I'd lose my pre-order, as well as the in-store pickup.

I ordered my 128GB matte black Plus last Saturday with an estimated Oct 12-18 delivery.

I was able to reserve and pickup the same phone a couple days ago at my local Apple store. I cancelled my online order when he said "She'll be bringing the phone up here shortly."

I gotta say this phone is great. My favorite iPhones were the 3GS (since it was my first), the iPhone 4, and now this one.

May I ask what payment method you used for the pre-order and what you used for in-store pickup?

Well, you don't have to switch it. All that you've done is reserve an AT&T Gold iPhone 128 gb Plus to be picked up and paid for at 12:30pm (my case). There is no penalty for not showing up other than you might get taken off the reserve list. And you ain't going to lose that reserved phone when you are standing next to the salesman and you cancel your pre-order. So, for a few hours yesterday I had both a pre order and a reserved phone. The system doesn't know or care that you have both. However, you can't have two orders in, tied to the same phone number. Which is why you have to delete the pre order before buying the reserved phone.

BTW, to answer the other question you posed above, I used the same card for both my pre order and the reserved phone I ended up buying. It was a prepaid AmEx gift card worth hundreds of dollars. Apple just debits the card $1 when you make the pre order (to make sure it works I suppose). They don't charge it until the phone is shipped.

So what happened? Did the sales associate have to kick your phone back out to inventory, or was he able to hold it while switching over the payment method?

I had a pre-order through Apple with an October 4-10 ship date range (Jet Black, of course). I found a Matte Black on Apple's website and ordered it 'pick up at store' and paid in full. When I went to the store, they refunded that paid in full and changed it to the iPhone Upgrade Program.

Mine was 'preparing' for shipment since Saturday (BS) and it still is. Apple has it set up to re-route back to them when it ships, so all is well.

You do not have a Next agreement until it actually ships, so waiting until you have it in your hand will work just fine.
