I just noticed today, when I sent a "long" text msg, that it gets sent in one text message balloon/bubble. Before, it gets sent in fragments of 3,4, or 5 bubbles depending on the length.

I haven't upgraded to iOS6 either. I was just curious. I like the new format. It's cleaner and well organized.

I've sent long messages on my old iPhone 4 running all the iOS's up to 6 and never noticed that it split the messages in to 3-4-5-6 bubbles.

I've also sent long messages on iPhone 5 running iOS6 and haven't noticed that either??

i've always been able to send imessages as one. Text messages however has always had a limit of 160 characters i believe, and long messages will be sent in numerous messages.
