I’m looking at the Pro Display XDR for pick up in LA area and they’re all out of stock and shipping is estimated for June/July. So I checked other major stores in other major cities and they’re all out of stock.

Has it always been this way? Or is this a sign of something new coming?
Or could it just be the global chip shortage?

I had been wanting this display most of the 2020 calendar year and it was always a long shipping delay with Apple. I finally pulled the trigger when I saw stock at Micro Center. From my experience, retailers like Amazon, Micro Center, B&H, and Adorama seem to get stock fairly regularly, and offer way better pricing.

My best guess is, the display manufacturing is being effected by the global chip shortages and it takes them a long time to fill an order. Or, Apple never expected a high demand for the XDR past the initial run so it was always going to be a built by order product?

I don't anticipate Apple will discontinue the Pro Display XDR at this point in time. They may soon offer a consumer grade display, but it shouldn't hurt XDR's market as this was never marketed to the mass. If rumors are true and the future MacBook Pro may soon get XDR (similar to iPad Pro), over time, this display should in theory become cheaper to manufacture as the technology becomes more standard. If anything, that would push them for a price drop on Pro Display XDR rather than a discontinuation. Apple made a similar move on the once gigantic 2004 30" Apple Cinema Display in late 2005/2006.

Just a reminder if you are an elite plus member at BestBuy you have a 45 day return window for the XDR. I ordered mine through BestBuy for this reason incase I ran into an issue or had some serious buyers remorse down the road.

I am keeping mine unless something becomes defective in it but just an FYI. Not trying to promote abusing return power but....it is nice to have the peace of mind of the 45 day window.

I ordered a Pro Display on 4/31/21 and just got the notification of shipment to be here on 5/24/21. In my experience Apple almost always beats their schedule, so I am expecting it on Thurs or so. In answer to your question, I think that the Pro Display is only built to order right now. I base that on the timing for delivery that a couple of acquaintances got that had almost the exact lead time. That and the fact that a search of stores in reasonable driving distance (and even ridiculous distance) all had it labeled as unavailable.

Ordered one on July 21st. Apple has pushed out the delivery date twice so far. The latest expected delivery date is Aug 13-15.
