Hi Guys I have an iphone arriving from the US today... the unlock guide on modmyiphone.com insists that you must first know what version firmware you are using as you have to have 1.0.2, how can you tell this before you begin the unlock?

Yes. You need to know the version of firmware before unlocking and after activation. After you have your phone activated using iNdepedance, you will be able to use iPhone without the phone. Now, on the iPhone...go to Settings->General->about then you will see the firmware version there.
