I have a strange problem with either my macbook pro (1,1, 1.83 CD) or my Snow Leopard disk. Basically, I can't install Snow Leopard on the MBP. Every time I try, it shuts down during install. Now, if I remove the hard drive and install snow leopard on the HD in an enclosure, the HD works fine when running through another computer. If I put the HD back into the MBP, it runs fine. I can install almost everything EXCEPT updates. If I try to install updates, it shuts down.
Now, if I install Leopard, everything is fine. It doesn't shut down, I can install updates etc.
However, because my leopard disk is damaged, I have to install it from an external drive (I back up all my disks). I've been installing (attempting to install) SL using the optical drive.
Now, a few strange things I've noticed: I've installed SL from another computer (an iMac) using the MBP in target mode. This works, but when I check the system profiler it reads "YojiTani's iMac" in the top bar (hope you get the idea here). The Snow Leopard disk (DVD) itself is VERY slow to start up.
My suspicion is that the SL disk is somehow faulty. I've used it on other machines and haven't had any problems, but it is slow AND there is often a strange point in the updating process when the computer shuts down. However, in those cases, when I restart, it resumes installing from wherever it left off. With the MBP it just starts over.
The Optical Drive is a possible culprit, but it works fine for everything else. I even tried as an experiment installing CS3 on it. No problems.
