I've ordered the new iphone 3GS. I have a first generation 16 one. I want to sell it to help pay for the new one. Can you give me the step by step directions on how to do this? How do I clear out my old phone to sell it? How do I keep all of my pics, apps, contact info, calendar, etc? Thanks so much!!

Back it up to your computer through itunes. Make sure it backs up your pictures, applications, and address book as well. Then once it backs up, you can restore it through itunes. This erases the phone back to factory settings. Once you erase it back to factory settings, it will give you the option to reload your data and contacts back on, do not do that. Once it is done restoring remove your sim card, and you are all set to go.

Erase using "Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings", it will probably take 2 hours to fully erase.

All of your information should be synced with your computer and email accounts so backup shouldn't be hard. Just backup and sync before you do the erase.

(Apps, Music, Videos, etc should be stored in your iTunes folder. Photos should be stored in your photo library or iPhoto. Mail should be saved on your mail server. Contacts should be stored in your address book on your computer or with your mail server. Calendars should be saved in Outlook, iCal, or your mail calendar.)

Thanks you all! One more question: how do you backup things on itunes?

Do I tell the person I'm selling it to they need to get their own SIM card? How much are those?

When you sync with iTunes it backs up your phone EVERY TIME. If you're not sure then you can right click the phone in iTunes (on the left pane) and click "Back Up".

Sim cards are free, but AT&T will make them sign a 2 year contract to get one. (However, they will be eligible for a subsidized upgrade at any time since they didn't purchase a phone from AT&T.)
