Hello,

I have an iPhone 6s with latest iOS 11.1.2 and suddenly I can not use the messages app anymore.

Tapping on the app from the home screen, I see the app opening but after less than a second the app crashes and I'm back at the home screen.

I tried, without any improvement:
- fiddling with the settings for the messages app
- hard reset
- factory reset the phone and restore from backup

Bottom line, I cant send/receive SMS and iMessages anymore. Any suggestions?

Sounds like something is corrupted in the backup.

Can you restore it as new?
Yes, sure I could restore as new then install and configure again all my applications... but I'd rather not do that. This should not be the way to fix an app crashing, especially an app that comes built-in with iOS!

I did factory reset the phone and restore from backup, but it did not help.

My thinking is that if it still happens when you restore it as new, there could be an issue with your carrier or SIM.

It turns out it really looks like an iOS issue. I reluctantly decided to try the "reset all settings" option and the messages app works again. I did not lose any of the apps and their data, however having to manually really all the iOS customizations is REALLY a pain.

Amazing that the most advanced phone and the most innovative invention of our time has issues with receiving/sending SMSs...

To be honest, I prefer syncing than restoring backups.

Regardless of such personal preferences there should be an easier way to fix issues with stock apps, I mean, easier than resetting the phone and re configuring from scratch.
I miss the days when apple devices "just worked" :(

I can’t believe it would take more than 15 minutes to put in your WiFi password, log into iCloud, and download your apps from your purchased list.

You used to have to be on hold longer than that when Steve Jobs was CEO.

I can't comment on that, then I never had to reset my iPhone in order to be able to send/receive SMS...
