    Hey Guys,

I am on vacation in Atlantic City and just dropped my iPad onto a marble floor and chipped the top of it. I am very angry at myself. Luckily, in my hotel (Caesars), there is an Apple Store. However, I do not have the Applecare+ plan. I bought the iPad the day it came out this past March so it should still be under the year warranty? I just don't know if this is something they would replace it on? Is it?

Thanks for your help! Very upset!

The best you can do is bring it in, be humble about it and explain to them what happened and hope they have mercy on you. They've been known to help people out like this before.

The key though is to be honest and nice, and don't get angry if they choose not to help you.

You can ask but accidental damage isn't covered outside of Apple Care+.

What SBG said...They are not obliged to replace your iPad, but a little polite grovelling might get you a result. Good luck:)

Just buy yourself a nice case, and lie to yourself that you never dropped it.
Or sell it for $300 on Craigslist, I assume it's the new iPad. Someone will buy it, and use money toward a brand new one.

If Apple will not replace it, you can check with your credit card company. Depending on the credit card, some companies provide 90 days of damage protection (probably expired) and an additional 1 year warranty.

    Good luck!

You are ridiculously lucky that the glass didn't crack!

Not covered under warranty, but they may make an exception for you.

I wouldn't, there are two Apple stores next to me, and I had a barely visable indentation made from bumping it into a wall while using it. I was very humble at both Apple stores and brought it in because the microphone was broken sometime later. Both saw it and sent me on my way.

Still, if the store is near you, the iPad can't be any less replaced than it is now, so that's another way of looking at it.

Well... They might make snarky remarks... But before you go, OP, make sure you have an appointment.

Well maybe the gods are smiling on me because I just came up from the casino and put in $20. After 3 hours of playing won about $520. If the off chance that the Apple Store says no tomorrow, how much would it be to get a replacement (hopefully new)? I read that they charge half of the what the iPad is worth. Is this true? I wouldn't wanna pay more than $250.

If it's just cosmetic damage get a case and forget about it.

That doesn't look like serious damage. If the iPad is otherwise running fine you could also just sell this one on ebay (pointing out the damage of course) and repurchase a new one--if the Applestore doesn't replace it for you.

They seem to be getting more strict ever since Applecare+ came out.

    1. Yes. Go. You have nothing to lose. Go in with the damaged iPad and ask them what they can do. They may help you out and replace it or they may say you have to pay a repair fee. The less of a stink you raise, the more likely they are to help you.

    2. Yes--make an appointment. I went to the Casesar's Palace Apple Store a couple of months ago in the middle of the day on a Tuesday and it was jam packed. Barely any room to walk.

If the device is running normally...

    1. Visit the Apple Store, be humble, and see what they say.

    2. Do not buy a new iPad. The damage to yours is merely cosmetic.

    3. Take the money from your casino winnings and buy a nice iPad case. If you're worried about future drops, try something sturdy like an Otterbox or similar. PLUS, a case will cover that unsightly bit of damage.

I would sell that one eBay or Craigslist, then cover the difference with the money that you won at the casino and buy AppleCare+ this time.

I don't see Apple replacing your iPad for free for that very minor cosmetic damage. That would be like asking the dealership to replace your entire car for free if you scratched your bumper.

Be happy that you didn't break the glass or screen and enjoy the rest of your vacation!

Out of warranty replacement = $299 for the new iPad, $250 for the older models.

    What's the result?

BTW, as long as the screen is fine, I'd cool with the scar. Chicks dig scars... :D

Well I went and I got a new iPad. I walked in, he told me there was a $249 charge for a new iPad. He then said, I'll be right back. He came back and said, the damage is minimal. Give me $49 and buy the AppleCare+ for an additional $49. I informed him that I believe the AppleCare+ was $99. He said because you are replacing your iPad, we can discount it. All in all, I paid about $118 after tax, for both my new iPad and AppleCare+.

Not a bad deal at all!
