I would buy a 25 dollar gevey sim from applenberry and jailbreak using redsnow. It's a semi-tether, but that's the best thing you can do right now.

Or you can purchase an unlock online for something like $130 dollars.

EDIT: Turns out I was wrong about Gevey, that won't work.

    Help!!Unlock AT&T iPhone 4 iOS 5.1.1 baseband 4.12.01

Did email to at&t and get the replied:
Thank you for taking the time to e-mail AT&T to request the device
    un-lock code for your iPhone.

The IMEI you provided is not eligible to be unlocked because of security
restrictions. Non AT&T customers are not eligible to have their iPhone
unlocked through AT&T. AT&T will unlock an iPhone under the following
    circumstances:

? The person requesting the unlock is a current AT&T customer or a
former AT&T customer who can provide the phone number or account number
    for the account
? The iPhone was designed for use on AT&T?s network; all contract
obligations, including any term commitment, associated with the device
to be unlocked have been fully satisfied.
? The iPhone has not been reported lost or stolen.

Also, current customer accounts must be in good standing with no
past-due amount or unpaid balance and has been active for at least sixty
    (60) days. Former customer account may be eligible for unlocking so long
as you do not owe AT&T no Early Termination Fee or other unpaid balance.

I am the un-eligible to get the unlock service :(

Any other ways to unlock it?

    Help!!Unlock AT&T iPhone 4 iOS 5.1.1 baseband 4.12.01

No I don have..Currently me now staying in Singapore. No one can help to do this.
I am so sad w/o a phone. Any help?

    ----------

I read a method from one article:
For example, your iphone is 1.95.00 baseband with IOS 4.1
then you download IOS 5.11...(But we know that IOS5.11 is using 4.12.01 baseband)...
that software will grab your baseband (1.95.00) and merged with IOS 5.1.1...
It will auto generate into another IPSW file....mean IOS 5.1.1 with 1.95.00 baseband...
Then by using that IPSW, only install into iphone..

Do anyone try this before? Is this works?

That might have worked if you had done it before upgrading to 5.1.1 and the newer baseband. Once you update your baseband you can't downgrade it.

This is a description of using a custom or No_BB IPSW to upgrade.
You didn't use this method, therefore you upgraded your baseband.

    AT&T iPhone unlock

I've been reading a few posts above from people asking for help on how to get their iPhone's unlocked that are locked to AT&T. For anyone who has tried the above steps of calling AT&T and requesting a free unlock without success, THERE IS A SOLUTION but it's not free (Read below).

    This is for anyone who:
    - Lives overseas and doesn't have access to an AT&T Account OR doesn't know anyone with an AT&T account.
    - Bought their iPhone under contract.
    - Has upgraded to the latest official firmware from apple and upgraded their baseband.

SOLUTION THAT I HAVE PERSONALLY USED:
I had my iPhone under contract with AT&T and even though I am a AT&T customer , they wouldn't unlock my iPhone for me.
So ,this is what I did.. researched a little bit for a factory unlocking website. Finally found this website called http://www.officialunlocks.com and noticed that they have been featured on modmyi.com as well by some moderators. Gave it a shot and paid $50 and 12 hours later , I received a confirmation email that my iPhone has been unlocked.
I plugged it into iTunes , Restored it and guess what I saw?? "Your iPhone has been successfully unlocked" message on iTunes. This was probably one of the happiest moment's of my life (In a while).. haha.

Anyway I was able to use a SIM card when I went overseas froma PrePaid carrier and it worked GREAT! I have a factory unlocked iPhone even though I am under contract with AT&T :).. Thanks Officialunlocks.com

Hope this solution helps someone out there.
    Thanks.

Chronic is unlocking phones too. He's recently had a sale on AT&T unlocks which might still be going on. I think he was charging $30. Very quick turnaround too.
