I want a $0.50/gal gasoline tax, all money goes towards paying down the national debt.

Perhaps we can also add another $10 to cigarettes to help pay for healthcare.

How about we add another tax for companies that make weapons and use that to pay for the majority of the debt which came from Bush's credit card wars?

And put that $0.50/gal gas tax towards investing in our infrastructure that's becoming borderline third world in some parts of the country.

Actually, that's a better idea. Put it towards infrastructure first.
    --- Post Merged, Aug 4, 2016 ---
That would be more of a lower-class tax hike. Middle-class tend not to smoke.

In theory, investing in infrastructure should help boost the whole economy, which would raise tax revenues which could then be used to reduce the deficit and/or debt.

Crumbling infrastructure is one of the main things holding back economic growth in this country.

Drop all foreign aid except that which directly affects the national security of the United States of America. That's probably 10% at the most.

Why not make it a round $1, and use some of the money to fix our nation's highways.

The problem, however, is that gasoline taxes are essentially regressive. Meaning that Bill Gates will end up paying an extra $400 a year (or nothing, if he drives a Tesla) - while the mom trying to support two kids working at the Wal-Mart in Renton, will probably end up paying more because she's got a clapped out old Explorer that gets about 10 mpg.

Paying off, or at least managing, the National Debt will require some sacrifice by a broader swathe of the American people than most politicians of any party are willing to admit.

Not that I agree with it AT ALL, but go off mileage and not gallons. Of course that would lead to odometer inspections(they can even charge us for that too.).

Very regressive but so are tobacco and liquor taxes. Times are tough and everyone needs to sacrifice.
