    Off topic...

We don't fight because we hate what is in front of us, but rather for what we love and leave behind us. My respect and thoughts go out to our fallen brothers and sisters and their loved ones.

    You silent tents of green,
    We deck with fragrant flowers;
    Yours has the suffering been,
    The memory shall be ours

    — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

That's a good poem. I always liked the one at the end of Hamburger Hill.

    "If you are able,
    save for them a place
    inside of you
    and save one backward glance
    when you are leaving
    for the places they can
    no longer go.
    Be not ashamed to say
    you loved them,
    though you may
    or may not have always.
    Take what they have left
and what they have taught you
    with their dying
and keep it with your own.
    And in that time
when men decide and feel safe
    to call the war insane,
    take one moment to embrace
    those gentle heroes
    you left behind."

‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’ Always a decent quote. Especially today.

Aparantly a bunch of people are confused about Menorial Day, not at MacRumors, but online in social media. It's about those who have fallen in the line of duty, it's not about you or your relative who served in the military. That would be Veterans Day, yet a lot of people are posting this weekend about a relative who was in the service, but did not perish in the line of duty. Is this nit picking?

Yes I do, and recently commented on it, somewhere around here. We can thank the Beer companies for making this an inebriation holiday here in the States.

It's only considered nit picking to other Veterans. The bitter part of me says we should feel lucky that Americans even remember we had people killed answering the call.

We need a draft again. With endless wars in the foreseeable future, my opinion is share the pain, not let them die, three cheers for them, if you see what I'm saying. Let the magnitude of these actions be felt across the board and maybe we as a society will get smarter about foreign adventures.

Most forget when this was made into a National Holiday. (hint - recent).
Still, while advertisements have become dominant, still, participating in activities like placing flags or other honoraries leaves a lasting mark on your soul. Even more so to us who have honorably served.

    Bless.

The draft was way over by my time. I was never a fan of the idea. 1. I always thought a Country that couldn't muster the volunteers to save itself doesn't deserve to continue. 2. The Selective Service is only for males, you wanted equal Rights, register and be voluntold to fight for them.

There are some politics involved with a volunteer system like relying on poor people to go do the fighting and dieing for your country, but I don't want to start a debate so I'll leave it at that.

Need more than a draft, we need a selective service that selects the, rich, the privileged, the sons and daughters of millionaires and billionaires, politicians, and corporate executives of weapons companies.

Consider the reduction in armed conflict, and rush to war, if the children of the rich and powerful were in the front lines of the charging troops running into machine gun fire. I pose to all, this type of selective service would have made our history a bit less bloody. As well as our future. If it's good enough reason for my son to die fighting for it, it should be as good a reason for kushner and ivanka to also fall in combat.

Agree in part but feel that if the single offspring of a family is all there is an exception should be allowed. I saw the devastation when the only child was lost.
