Hopefully all of the hostages make it out unharmed. And for the gunmen. Well they won't be missed.

Reliable reports so far are that there is a single man who has taken the hostages.

The daily telegraph sinking even lower. A whole front page of unsubstantiated sensationalist nonsense. The least trusted media source in sydney for a reason.

There's now reports and vision of people escaping the cafe. Still no idea on motive, how many hostages, or how many people are involved.

Stay safe Sydney. Hopefully everyone makes their way out safely and this can end non violently.

That's not possible. Australia banned guns. There can't be an armed gunman.

And what makes it worse is that cafe is at Darling Harbour, on the east side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. That area is nothing but a tourist trap. Nice area, but a crowded tourist trap.

As mentioned, some are escaping, so hopefully there will be some explanation for this. For now, my eyes are glued to the Sydney Morning Herald and the ABC.

And straight to the sensationalism. You should read up on their laws before jumping to such a sensational conclusion.

Australia hasn't banned guns, and this isn't the place. There is at least two threads for gun control can you please keep it to there?

It is at Martin Place, in the heart of the CBD! Quite a ways away from Darling Harbour...

Circular Quay is the place you mean bradl. Darling Harbour is a bit further west. But it is a crowded tourist area you are right.

edit: found a report from the australian. Doesn't seem to be confirmed by police.

Inserting your own views on American Gun-Politics into a completely unrelated terror event in another country.

Guys' get local Sydney geography correct :)

They closed down the opera house due to a suspicious package, which is at Circular Quay. Martin Place is further south from there.

I was just there a short 5 months ago and never the less Martin Place is a very busy area. This really is shocking and hopefully with the three hostages escaping or being let go may give some further hints.

Paraphrased from the Police press conference:

They are in contact and negotiating with the individual
They are not going to comment on motives
Still no idea of how many hostages, but less than 30
The 3 people who have escaped will be seen by medical staff first and then worked with to help the others

For the rest of Sydney city please travel home after work as normal.

This is not the way an open forum should be. Openly dismissing people's input and ideas based on their country of birth or residence is pretty vile.

Just some nutcase with a gun.

Hopefully the cops can sort this out safely for all involved.

They evacuated the Opera House, all the court houses, the state library and Martin Place but I'm pretty sure that's precautionary.

Haven't seen anything about a package.

Previous reports of devices about the city were proven false because the police had not actually spoken to the gunman at the time of the reports.

Just some nutcase with a gun.

It is sounding more like that as things progress.

One of the commentators have been passing comments that it would have been easy enough to acquire and use the Islamic State flag instead of the black flag with religious phrasing (what this is, is still an assumption).

The recent attacks of terror have been 'brutal' and this one has not been thus far, it doesn't sit the same as other 'attacks'.

None the less it is still very very terrible to see.

A nutcase with a gun is a Sunday evening for us here in the USA.

Yeah it would appear so. Hopefully a reasonable nutcase.

Can we keep the gun talk to one of the gun threads?

Has been mentioned on the 'ahem' sky news broadcasting. I cannot recall which one of the correspondents mentioned it. Search for it, you'll find it quick enough, a few media outlets have picked it up. Here's one. https://news.yahoo.com/sydney-opera-house-evacuated-suspicious-package-found-media-002527095.html

As to the Houses of Parliament the are just down the street and thus I can understand why they'd be shutdown.

Yeah I found it on the australian. Looks like it was unsubstantiated and that things were closed for security reasons only given they were high profile. So far all the evidence seems to be everything is confined to Martin Place thank goodness.

I'm surprised he'd take such desperate measures to pick up women...

No, we banned automatic and semi-automatic guns. Only licensed individuals are permitted to own a bolt action hunting rifle. And there are strict rules on storage, in other words you can't keep it for self defence. Its a tool for hunting, or sport only and is stored with the firing pin locked in a separate location to the rifle cabinet.

However, there are a few black market pistols getting around which are semi-auto not unlike the police issue Glock. Plenty of revolvers too still being seized in raids from time to time.
