iVolume is for adjusting volume on an audio files but what is the equivalent program (if any) for a movie file (.avi, .mp4, etc)?

Apologies...I didn't relies you meant when you encoding it. That I don't know.

Best I can offer, which you may know of, is the switch in iTunes preferneces that supposedly adjust volumes across the board for what it sends out. Never had much luck with it myself.

It's possible to "normalize" audio and adjust levels using a variety of software, but I personally think it's unwise, as it requires a lossy recoding of any existing audio. Additionally, the dynamic range of some movies is just designed to be larger than others, and will sound "weird" if the explosion is as loud as the dialog.

You mean as quiet as the dialog. :)

Most movies (and musical recordings) are 'normalised', meaning they are as loud as they can possibly be without distorting the audio signal. Apps like iVolume make quiet recordings louder by distorting/compressing the signal, meaning you can't have any louder parts in the music, as everything is 'loud. Same with movies.

Making excessively loud music and movies quieter though? Not sure about that. You have a volume control don't you?
