In iOS 18 you can lock any app behind Face ID. But when you do it is my understanding notifications from these apps won't even appear.

This is different from the way Face ID app lock works now. For example, even though my current banking app is locked by Face ID in iOS 17, I can still receive notifications from it.

So how do existing apps that already support Face ID lock act under iOS 18 with regards to notification delivery? Can anyone who is using the iOS 18 beta shed some light on this?

Different type of lock.

Banking (and other) apps have the authentication method (password, or FaceID or TouchID) *within* the app itself, with no impact on the OS. In other words, all OS functions work on that app.

The iOS 18 lock is part of the OS and nothing to do with the app itself. You need to authenticate with FaceID before the app will work at all. So you can't open it or trigger it via notifications. Once you unlock the app it then works as usual, which in the case of banking apps will require another FaceID scan.

OK, so if you are using the banking app's Face ID lock in iOS 18 (as opposed to locking the app with the Face ID iOS 18 lock system) you will still see notifications from the banking app in iOS 18?

If the app has Face ID login, you’ll essentially have two authentications: one to open the app and another to login to the app.

Also, locked/hidden apps automatically remove any corresponding widgets when locked/hidden.

You also have two options when setting Face ID lock:

A) just lock access
B) lock access + disable notifications and Spotlight

Edit: added screenshot of what happens when enabling Face ID lock to this app.

Edit2: it seems this function is well designed - absolutely I have not found yet exploit to brake FaceID protection. It does not asks for password when authentication failed (thank God…), needs the same way to disable such blockage.
Also after many attempts (30+) it was rock solid and prevented to open app.
