How do you get a "clean slate" after piracy?

    This is something I've pondered.

How does one get a "clean slate" after they've pirated something? It seems that with RIAA lawsuits, the verdict comes months after the incident of downloading. This could be true for any such piracy lawsuit.

So, a quandary, isn't it? Can someone justify giving up piracy when they could face punishment for their previous actions at any time, despite deleting the infringing material or is there a legal was to start fresh?
