LOL! I really don't care if my iPhone X is considered a "status symbol" or an item of which to be jealous....I didn't buy it for other people's appreciation, consideration and possible envy, I bought it for my own use and enjoyment. I love the thing, it is just great, fitting into my lifestyle very well and doing what I need it to do. End of story......

Nobody worth talking to believes that a smartphone is a stays symbol in 2018.

I beg to differ.

If you have a circle of friends that use iOS especially if you're attracted to your sexual preference then yes that WILL matter.

Status Symbol is in the pricing:
over $1000 retail anywhere in the first few months means you have the financial stability to purchase it without affecting your daily lifestyle. For those seeking a life long mate ... financial stability IS a HUGE check box that is sought after, and ranks higher than phsyical attributes and up there with personality.

Sad I know because financial stability can change for a LOT of people over a short period of time. But that's the world we've been living in since the 1990's ... or longer. Smartphones, Cars, and your home is usually a better view than jewelry which is easily faked.

I saw a homeless man using an iPhone X. This was during the launch week.
For about 40 bucks a month anyone can own an iPhone X or whatever phone. Ever since Apple introduced iPhone Upgrade Program. It has lost its value.

Pretty sure there are at least 28.882 million people on this board who've returned theirs!

Seriously though, I bought and returned 2. Plenty of others here have bought and returned many more. I wonder what percentage of those 29 million were returned? I'm guessing a lot. Even if it were 5%, thats almost 1.5 million returned. I'm guessing the percentage is actually higher, which explains the reports of the possible early demise of the X, despite all the stellar reviews.

No woman is going to care what kind of phone you have. And if she does. Who the hell cares anyway?

While agree that this world is VERY shallow ... people do care more than you may think about the phone you have:

Messaging:
Emoji and now Animoji
Apple Pay
Apple Pay Cash - more family concern vs your girlfriend or boyfriend (husband/wife combo maybe)
Apps and suggestions

Back in the day it was about BlackBerry for BBM remember that?

Sad and pathetic but it's there, more subtly than we think.

Perhaps a girl would care, but women? I haven't seen it.

Not sure where you live, but the women I know care more about the fact I own more than 5 detached properties in the most expensive city in Canada.

It's like there being 29 million bugattis..just say'n
Huh?

Because I have one!

/thread.

No…wait, I don't have one…but well…I…people in general!

Never mind!

Uhhhh…me again.

Hmmm. Maybe the better question is…"Which status symbol out of those 29 million do you grab and check when Marimba goes off an all of them?"

I'm not sure things define status.

Not in my world anyway. You can own an iPhone x and still live in your parents house in your 40's.

Or you can own a Nokia 3310 and your own house in your 20's.

I know which I'd rather be.

It's not just about the iPhone X being a status symbol, it's Apple in general. And outside a tech form, do you really think the average iPhone consumer cares enough about their iPhone X being a status symbol? It Could be as simple as some just want the latest device because they have the opportunity to upgrade.

If a $1000 shows financial stability then I really question people’s’ expectations there.

Probably the same percentage of people who return iPhones every year but let’s just exaggerate and say it’s about 80%.

Having iPhone X means showing other's that You got the latest and greatest & you are on the top of food chain:p
It’s no different to owning the latest iPhone in any given year.

It's about disposable income. The X isn't anything special over an 8. It has virtually the same specs and runs the same apps but can cost $400 more. The same way the Edition Apple Watch... It doesn't do more over a sport version but can cost several hundred dollars more.

The comparison is a bit off there because the materials used to build the products are different and hardware cost will increase the price there. But still an iPhone X is probably better to be compared with a 8 Plus and then the difference is $200. Really I don’t think there’s any difference between someone who buys a 8 Plus and someone who buys a X. Both still come within affordable range if people are into it. If the latest tech mean anything to them at all. Otherwise the cheaper versions will do just fine for most people.

Point is Apple has a whole range of cutting edge and previous generation phones available. All of which run the same apps and offer roughly comparable performance. The biggest differences in Cameras and onboard AM. But the X does so at a much higher price point.

Outside of this forum most people just want a phone that works and don't care about the specs... just the price. The X is most definitely priced as a premium product compared to the rest of Apple's lineup.
