Urgent situations need urgent and sizable funding, but how much is too much, or too little?
I don't know enough on the situation to know how much is enough, and I am not taking political sides just want to know.

Zika is in the US and new cases are rapidly increasing in number.

    Obama is asking $1.9 billion
Senate last month approved $1.1 billion
The House, in turn, approved $622 million
They are also wanting to divert monies from Ebola

    Was Obama asking too much?
Are the Republicans too cautious, too (gasp), conservative?

Latin America’s Zika virus is the latest undocumented immigrant to hit our shores, says Michelle Malkin.

She would say that, but I don't think she knows that legal people could travel out of the US, usually for vacations or business trips (since people won't spend a couple thousand dollars to go somewhere just to paint pictures of copyrighted cartoon mice on building walls), get bit, then return. Mosquitoes won't obey "keep out" or "infect only the illegals who want to go into neighboring countries illegally" signs. Or does she really believe that?

Spend nothing. Not a farthing. Zika is government FUD like bird flu, ebola, etc. Keeps the sheep frightened and oh by the way I need $10 million for my research or I won't get tenure.

Besides, the World Health Organization says there is noting to fear from Zika and it's perfectly safe for pregnant women to frolic on Brazilian beaches adjacent to the Great Fever Swamp.

    $0 is too little.

How much is life valued in a pro-life country?

Zika must ultimately pose a larger threat...

Remember, everyone thought AIDS would just be limited to druggies and teh homersexuals, but - whoops - the virus didn't stay put and even innocent blood transfusions led to its spread. Pity Reagan's mind was mush or he would have thought it through on what seems to be targeted could actually end up affecting everybody.

Also, Ebola has had more research done on it already - Zika is new, it's critical we learn more about it faster.

These seem like reasoned, logical points of view to explain why Obama is asking.

A billion dollars worth of prevention is better than $100 billion worth of panic.

Zika is a definite problem. One with particularly horrifying consequences if allowed to go unchecked (ie. microcephaly in newborn infants of infected women.) Its also somewhat linked to bigger problems such as global warming. As temperatures rise, the range at which the disease vector mosquitos can thrive heads northwards (now including Washington DC and New York City). Warmer winters mean less die off over the winter months, and larger populations come springtime.

Tackling a problem like Zika is one without any clear-cut free-market solutions. It requires a multifaceted approach: Research to develop effective vaccines; tests for infection; treatments; and anti-mosquito agents. It also requires an effective public-health response: City and county health officers going out, identifying breeding areas, issuing orders to remove hazards like discarded tires. And ordering spraying.

The NiH and CDC experts tell us we need a little less than $2 billion to deal with this problem. It seems like a very false economy to argue with them

I know you're smarter than that. Because you said so.

Infected illegals are steaming into the states via tunnel. Unless they are airlifted, like that Honduran woman, brought to the states to drop anchor.

    From 2014:

Disease plagues illegal immigrants; lack of medications, basic hygiene blamed

Communicable diseases continue to be a problem at the New Mexico facility built to house illegal immigrant families surging across the U.S.-Mexico border, and the immigrants themselves aren’t taking their own health care very seriously, according to an audit released Monday.

None. Stuff like this is the planets way of controlling population at a level it can sustain. We need to stop screwing with this stuff. Were obsessed with saving people.

So are the illegals just going around raping everyone and spreading zika that way? Or do you think your wall idea is somehow gonna stop mosquitoes?

Great, so I suppose we don't do anything about any virus or bacteria infection ever right?
    --- Post Merged, Jun 9, 2016 ---
Obama was asking the amount the CDC recommends to fight it so i would say he asked the right amount, the senate approve to little, and what the House approved was just pathetic

"Communicable diseases continue to be a problem at the New Mexico facility built to house illegal immigrant families surging across the U.S.-Mexico border, and the immigrants themselves aren’t taking their own health care very seriously, according to an audit released Monday."

"While the Border Patrol is doing a good job of handling the surge of illegal immigrant children traveling alone without their parents, the families who are being housed at a special facility continue to have health problems and trouble using the bathroom, the Homeland Security inspector general said."

“Family unit illnesses and unfamiliarity with bathroom facilities continued to result in unsanitary conditions,” Inspector General John Roth wrote in a memo to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson."

And by the way, you forgot to include murderers in your list.

Katie Steinle was murdered by an illegal Alien that snuck back into the United States 5 times, being let back into an illegal sanctuary city.

“The death of Kathryn Steinle, who was fatally shot on July 1 while strolling on San Francisco's Embarcadero, was a tragedy. And when the suspect was revealed to be a Mexican national with a criminal record who had been deported several times, it became a flash point in the long-divisive political debate about how to reform the nation's immigration system."

"Now Steinle's parents are pushing for changes, and the House of Representatives has passed legislation that would restrict federal funds for cities such as San Francisco that refuse to comply with federal immigration laws.”

We never seem to want to stop and ask if we should when it comes to something like this.

Why can't some disease go around that affects mosquitos and ticks instead of the other way around. Human carriers of MIV (HIV for Mosquitos).

    Well, we can.

We can create genetically modified mosquitos that are sterile. The females breed with these sterile males, and within a single generation, the mosquito population disappears.

The problem is that the good old American public gets most of its scientific education from Hollywood movies. So you have a bunch of jokers running around talking about "super mosquitos" that are going to come along and crush them in their SUVS. Because, like, they remembered something bad happening in Jurassic Park.

I'm just saying we developed bio-weapons, why can't we invest our energy into cyanide for mosquitos, harmless against creatures. I'm mean come on Drax made a weapon that kills people but doesn't harm animals :p

    Well, TRUE!
We need a little population control.

...unless that includes you and your family.

You know almost all the medical research in this country is funded by the NIH right? Probably one of the best things about the US govt including NASA and department of energy
