Hello! I am looking at purchasing a refurb July 2014 15in Macbook Pro base model with 256gb hard drive.
I am interested in how much free space is present out of the box. How many GB does Apple's base OS X and apps occupy?

    Thanks

A new Mac with the iLife and iWorks apps installed will use about 20GB of drive space.

Thank you very much. I ordered a refurb base 2014 model for my wife(it has taken her 4.5yrs to accumulate 200gb on 2010 iMac). I think she will be golden with 256gb as she will writing a few school papers and using the internet but wanted the bigger screen :)

FWIW, the drive had 230gb free out the 256 GB

Exactly. You have 250GB formatted capacity, minus the 20GB for OS X and iLife/iWorks, leaves you with 230GB usable.
