How about Trump starts selling access to himself, Pence, and his cabinet right at the inauguration itself?

Obama raised $55 million in '09 and $43 million in 2013. This is nothing new.

Given Clinton's 30 years of selling herself out, I don't believe that any total (if any) that Donald accumulates within the next 4-8 years could ever compare. :D

Oh sure, money is always raised! I don't think Obama directly sold access to his cabinet for that money, though... In the article, Richard Painter (ethics lawyer for George W. Bush) puts it this way:

    --- Post Merged, Jan 19, 2017 ---
Um, Hillary Clinton has never been the president of the United States...

The one difference is Trump ran his campaign by speaking out against politicians doing this kind of stuff. This is more comparable to Obama running against wars and then continuing the ones we were in and getting us involved in new ones.

Double standard? No double standard here. Obama did not sell himself for money. Trump is explicitly selling himself for money. That is different!

I would rather it not take place at all. But a candidate who is advertising to the world that he can be bought for the right price? That's gotta be a new low for this country.

Ok, show me an advertisement from the Obama administration, where if you gave him one million dollars, he'd let you come and confer with his top advisors for several hours.

Because that is exactly what Trump has just done.

He already has - and is

Yes. And that money went to a huge celebration and also to fund several other events like the easter one at the WH

We now have a President-elect who has raised nearly double that - is having a significantly lower key event (less formal balls, entertainment, etc) - so the question that will linger is how the surplus, and there will be a huge one, will be used.

Clearly does. He said he would fund the campaign entirely himself and didn't even do that.

That's the point. Look at how much money she raised from donors and special interests just this past election year. And then on top of that look at all that she has had raised during her career. You don't have to be president to engage and pay for play.

I'm sure the excess went to plant a tree. If you believe that Christie has a bridge to sell you.

What excess, Obama's? Look it up - the funds were used for other events at the White House. We will have to wait to see what Trump spends his on.

Well, hmm. I guess Obama has had some fundraising dinners (although the maximum allowed donation on that second link was $2500, not $1,000,000). So, maybe less difference than I'd thought.

Then again, Trump here is shouting to the world on his very first day in office that you can buy him for a million dollars. I still think that's a new low...
    --- Post Merged, Jan 19, 2017 ---
What play, though? She was not in office. Pay for just talking to a celebrity is one thing; pay for getting access to someone who can manipulate the executive office in your favor is another thing entirely!
