I'm really liking my 4S and iOS 5 (especially now I can hide news-stand!), however there is one tiny thing that's bugging me ...

When I use find my friends the distances it gives me to my friends is in Km rather than miles. How do I change this to miles?

My regional settings are set to United Kingdom and Google maps comes up in miles as do all my other navigation apps (apart from foursquare, not sure if that's related)

Can anyone help?

I guess there's no way to do this then and it's an iOS 5 bug?

How do I report it?

I don't think it's a bug. It's just a matter of certain apps, including Find My Friends, trying to respect what it believes is the correct distance unit for your region.

Well, then it is an epic fail as here in the UK we use miles!

Sounds like a bug to me!

It's such a simple calculation for it to do though that it seems silly to leave it out. Presumably it'll come in the next update. Big omission in my book. Apart from that it's a useful app.

Fix: Region format change

"Find Friends" uses the Region Format configured in the settings app under General >International. If you are using a region format that normally expresses distances in kilometres (e.g. Canada), Find Friends app will display distances in kilometers.

Mines set on United Kingdom and it still shows km. They need to read up on their units :)

The settings come from the phones locale - if you change yours to united states find my friends changes to miles - Apple messed up again. They did this for the maps when it first came out.

I would never ever have guessed this, I had to go google.

So basically, this whole metric system isn't all that grand and we can keep using miles and inches and feet?? Cool beans, my brain will like that.

Go to apple.com/feedback and find the spot to send the info in.

This will be my "learn something new" thing for the day! :D

Try a different locale in Settings -> General -> International -> Region Format. Or try setting it to something different and then set it back to UK. I am in Canada and it was set to US; changing it to Canada gave me kilometers instead of miles.

If I change locale to say "United States" then I will indeed get find my friends in miles, but then my date, currency and other options will be wrong.

The fact is that the "United Kingdom" locale produces distances in miles for google maps so why can't it in find my friends?

Sorry, to ressurect a oldish thread, but has anyone found a way to do this?

on iOS 5.0.1 all my region was set to UK but the distance was in km, which is great... now on 5.1 it's moved everything to miles.... ARRRRGGGHHH I don't think in miles, I'm in Km as is my car and sat nav etc.

Why can't we have granular controls over the formatting?!!?!?!?!

Having upgraded to ios6 where "find friends" appears to have improved, I found this thread having been irritated by the kilometres rather than miles problem. Looks like there is no fix and that Apple are unaware that the UK have not (so far) changed from miles to kilometres.

Hi, When In Find Friends you will see in the top right hand corner of the screen a "i" for info... click it and you will have the option to go from Kilometers to Miles.
