Kinda confusing...using the "Tell a Friend" option counts as an entry, but I don't see how that counts as a download. So since Apple's contest only counts downloads...

I don't understand how the "Tell a Friend" option allows anyone to have any chance of getting a prize.

I just checked the rules here, and it seems that either the Tell a Friend or song downloads count as entries for the contest. Man, I have quite the pet peeve of things not being explained clearly, and that only gets worse when we're dealing with the full and legal rules of the contest for crying out loud, or even those rules not being explained in full in the article!

    What about Canada?

I read the rules and it seems it's only eligible for people who live where the iTMS is active.

Does this mean that when using the "Tell a Friend" method, people from Canada, or any other place where they don't have the iTMS, won't be eligible!?

    Cause that stinks.

All right, now I'm starting to get just a lot pissed off. I'm hearing about this Tell a Friend feature for the first time, but I can't find it anywhere in iTunes. Here's what iTunes tells me in Help:

"To email the URL to one of your published iMixes to a friend, click the Publish arrow to the right of the published playlist in the Source list, and then click "Tell a friend.""

    [1] URL "of"?
[2] The arrow in the Source list first has to be turned on. And that arrow only takes you to the music store.
I checked the legal rules, and found this:

"a free alternative means of sending an email to Apple at via the iTunes “Tell a Friend” feature (a song download or Tell a Friend email will be deemed an “Entry(ies”). The “Tell a Friend” feature can be easily accessed at iTunes by selecting a song, and clicking the “Tell a Friend” link that is displayed for that song. One Entry will be automatically submitted for each song downloaded or Tell a Friend email sent."

--> easily accessed??? I selected a song (in both one of my custom playlists from iTunes, and form a random song from the store), and there is no "Tell a Friend" link for that song to be found. Upon control-clicking everywhere I could think of (right-clicking if you're thinking Windows), I still found no "Tell a Friend" option. That line about "easily accessed" is complete bulls***, because Apple provides no explicit or correct directions as to how to get to the link!

So that set off yet another pet peeve of mine: Searching for things. Well, I did a search on the forums, and that worked.

For those of you that also can't figure out how the hell to get to the damn feature, read this carefully. Look, here's what you do visually:

I suspect (may be wrong, because it's not really supported directly by any of the contest materials) that it goes like this:

If the number of songs is at 99,999,999 and there has been no 100M winner yet, then the *NEXT* entry, whatever it is, wins the prize. Tell a Friend entries don't advance the download count (obviously, one would think), but can qualify as the winning entry if they get processed at exactly the right moment.

Legally, Apple has to either set aside a guaranteed prize for free applicants, or treat a free entry as equivalent to a paid entry in terms of likelihood and circumstances of winning. There is nothing forcing Apple to call a free entry a "download", and ... well, quite a bit (including SEC rules) forbidding it from doing so, so I doubt that an entry == a download on their counter as the article concludes.

what do you guys think? it seems hard to believe, that entering a couple of times would increase your chances of winning a prize.

it would be interesting though, to find out if a "tell-a-friend" entry would win anything...

I think that I will just try with the purchase a song route. Don't actually know of someone to use.
