I'm in the process of buying a MBP via Craigslist. The MBP is listed as new, in unopened box.

The seller doesn't know if the screen is glossy or matte---apparently there is no indication on the outside of the box.

The seller provided me with the serial number, but I wasn't able to use the serial # to determine the screen type.

Does anyone know how I can determine whether the screen is glossy or matte prior to purchasing the MBP?

So if you're having a great deal, just take it and don't care about the screen finish. If it's not that great a deal and you do care, buy somewhere you know what you get.

It says Glossy on the box in the specs section if it is glossy.

Going with the theme of 'beware of good CL deals', how would someone who has a brand new, in the box MBP not know if it was glossy or matte finish? I mean, really?

careful now...

Ok, the OP probably already finished this deal, but let me say... BUYER BEWARE on craigslist. Make the seller an offer or whatever, but OPEN THE BOX and see which screen it is BEFORE you pay them. And then, if it's the screen you want, TURN IT ON AND TRY IT OUT for awhile before you pay them. You might also want to run the serial number by apple to see if it was reported as stolen.

Send us an update on how it went.

Good luck,

Ado

I'm the OP...and I appreciate all the advice.

Yeah, Craigslist can be a squirrelly place to buy a computer. I bought a brand new MBP from CL last year. When I went to pick it up, I made sure to open the box and boot up the computer before I paid for it.

I didn't go through with this transaction because the price wasn't right.
