Used to be able to use Google Notifier to set Mac OS default mail client as Gmail. This has now been discontinued

Is there another way to set Gmail as default mail client?

Or at least, are there any extensions for Safari to use Gmail as default mail client? Now every time I click a mailto: link, it opens Mail.app, which I don't use.

(I am trying Safari for the battery life benefits on my MBA. Long time Chrome user.)

Problem is: Gmail is not a mail client. Gmail is a mail provider.
And, now you are using Safari to access your Gmail - and that's fine.
Now, clicking an email address will launch the default email reader - which you still have set to Apple's Mail app. (and, you don't use Mail)
You can change the default email reader in Mail's preferences.

(or, you could consider using your Gmail account in your Mail.app)

Thank you so much.

Webmailer does the job perfectly. Thank you. It can be set to make gmail in Safari the default email client in Mavericks.

There is a bug: you have to make Webmailer the default email client from preferences in Mail.app. It doesnt work accessing the Webmailer PrefPane in System Preferences
