It absolutely depends on what you need. I've come to rely on the bandwidth here and definitely put it to full use. But as you said there is ADSL broadband service here in Japan that is half or less the price of fiber optic and is still quite speedy if you are in good proximity to the local switching station.
Plus ADSL is a lot easier to install, depending on where you live.

Sometimes, if you live in an older apartment complex, everyone has to agree to go to FTTH for that service to be installed.

Regarding the fiber, as I said above if you plan on sticking with NTT for the long run you can get the "zuto isshou waribiki" and your monthly fee will drop over time. It's sort of like the cell carriers here with their reducing fees for years under contract.
Even ADSL rates have decreased over time. Started out around $90 for 1Mbps service when it first came out. Slowly over time the cost has gone down and the speed has gone up. No complaints. Sure beat dial up cost wise.

As for how long I will be here in japan. Originally came for a couple of years. Still here after many years. So who knows.

Almost everything in Japan is ridiculously expensive in comparison to the states: gasoline, real estate, food, you name it. Broadband internet is one category where Japan offers much more for much less.
Japan = Technology

That much is for sure. I am only about an hour train ride from Japan. So I enjoy checking out Akihabara and Ginza (Apple & Sony stores).

Yes, Japan is very expensive, but there are ways to decrease your living costs.

How long are you in? I am in the same boat. I came in January, 1994 for a planned stay of two years. Now we're well into year 14. :eek:

I have to assume you meant "Tokyo" when you wrote "Japan". :p

I envy you that. Being out here in Shikoku it is a rather expensive trip to Osaka and takes 2 hours even using the shinkansen from Okayama.

Absolutely, many of which I use daily. ;)

Cheers.

TellSpeed.com : A nice but simple speedtest

I usually test broadband internet speed at www.tellspeed.com . This free service also tells the file transfer rate (which is the real speed that you actually get at your end and its rarely above 1500 kb/sec!!!). The speed that ISP claims to provide is almost never accurate.That is why a 10MB file does not download in 1 second at 10MB/s connection!!! tellspeed.com is a nice handy utility which (i think) does not exaggerate the results.

Here's mine. I feel really jealous. And for some reason, I get higher results in firefox than Safari...:confused:
