Lately, after reading some threads that had comments around pornography, and after seeing the movie The Whistleblower, I started searching for relations between pornography and human trafficking.

I've always thought that human trafficking is more directly connected to prostitution, not so much pornography. Truth is, I couldn't find statistics. Some said that around 1 out of 5 images of porn in the internet are of children (minor 18 I guess), and that the business of child porn is now around $3 billion dlls.

I came across this article, from which I'll quote a paragraph:

Now, I don't believe in prohibiting porn, as some republican candidate proposed. But, shouldn't it be more regulated?

And, how linked do you think pornography and human trafficking are?

I probably need to look more into it to get a better idea of the scope of the problem. But the one thing that doesn't add up for me is that I see no reason for trafficking humans.

Pornography isn't an industry that exists "here" or "there". These days, anybody can buy the equipment and set up a website or upload a video. I would think pornography has become far more decentralized than it once was, reducing the need for human trafficking.

The web might actually be alleviating the problem. Of course, I reserve the right to be 100% wrong on this issue. Please correct me if I am.

The most I could find were personal stories and personal articles denouncing how pornography is linked with human trafficking. But none of them gave statistics. Either because not such a link exists, or because it would be very difficult to get one, since porn is not regulated.

But human trafficking statistics are more "precise". And to my astonishment, it is a fairly big market. And with the amount of money behind pornography, I wonder wether the people who use human trafficking for prostitution might be doing the same for pornography.

I don't think they traffic humans just for pornography, but that once that they have kidnapped women they see an opportunity to make more money, and start producing porn. But as you said, I could be 100% wrong.

I have friends in the industry. I don't think there's much of a link between human trafficking and porn- at least not in gay porn. It would make no sense- there's not a shortage of guys who will have sex on camera.

This article from '09 claims that around half of human trafficking in .us is for the sex trade, primarily prostitution rather than pornography (though prostitutes could probably moonlight, so to speak, in porn.

Ask most Americans, they will tell you there is no slavery here. It seems to be a matter of what they want to believe, not so much actual reality. Bring a person to a foreign country where they know no one but the boss, cannot speak the language and look out of place, it is pretty easy to keep them confined and afraid while they do your bidding.
