What causes these springboard crashes on an iPad 2, non jail broken, with updated iOS?

No apps at all... Just the plain Jane ios5.1.1

So... I'm at my ropes end...

Ready to bounce this POS off the wall at high velocity... This is my second iPad in 7 weeks.

First one completely died after only 6 weeks of light use. Just died... Took it into to the apple store, they replaced it with this one i currently have.

Now this one keeps crashing, constantly... Mostly springboard crashes, or safari crashing.... My crash logs detail hundreds upon hundreds of crashes...

It even crashes when I try to access my setting via the settings app...

I've updated, restored, restored, restored restored and restored the software until I'm sick... Always using freshly downloaded copy of the iOS never the same install to eliminate any chance of corrupted download.

Always restore iPad to new, ever from a backup...

And I still keep getting these crashes so frequently that I'm done...

Ready to bounce the $500 piece of crap off the wall.

I guess I'll have to take this one back to the apple store too...

You knew, if i wanted to endure this type of stuff I would buy something running windows...

Hundreds of springboard crashes, non jail broken ipad2 ios5.1.1

Million of other users would suggest your experience is out of the ordinary and not indicative of the iPad in general.

And by 'springboard crash' could you elaborate. When does this happen ? What are you doing when it crashes ? Are you on safari, if so what sites are you looking at when this happens.

The more information the more people could say - oh here is where the issue lays, if help is what you seek.

If venting is all that matters, carry on.... but as I say your experience is certainly not indicative of the whole.

It's solid for most folks, have you tried a DFU restore and load the apps one at a time from the app store not (don't use backup for apps)

iCloud sync before hand to restore contacts, email etc.

Take it back.

Tom

Yes, path of least resistance... I wonder if apple will reimburse me for my gas to and fom the only store within 90 miles of me... ANd my time wasted doing so?

Yeah, didn't think so...

Cruising all the other forums dedicated to iPads and the apple support forums it's clear the issue im having, is not isolated. It's very common... Seems to me that apple would step up and fix it... But I'm betting they are putting all their eggs in one basket ios6 and the ipad 3 and don't care about anyone else...

Having problems?

Go buy an iPad 3 when ios6 comes out, tat will fix them!

Suckers...

No it is not common for other users. You can also call.apple.support and do the exchange through the mail

Apple will most likely send you a new unit via overnight mail and you simply place the defective unit in the box and return. When you speak do Applecare, try to be nice, as it may make a difference in the end result

No it is not common for other users.

I just spent the lt 3 hours reading threads on three different support forums including apples own forums.... Reading an endless list of folks have the same problems as I am...

On both the iPad and the iPhone.... Springboard crashing like mad, for no apparent reason... These date back to the introduction of its 5.1

Facts do not cease to exist simply because you chose to ignore them.... The problem is real, many, many, many people are suffering with it... Evidentially apple has no intention of fixing it either.

Sad... If true.

Sad... If true.

Sorry about the bad luck you are having, But many users having the same problem still does not male it common. If you walk into a hospital, you'll find many sick people. If you read support forums, you'll find many people with problems on their devices. Doesn't change the fact that the majority of population is healthy, and the majority of iPad users have no problems with them.

Suckers...

Don't know if Apple will reimburse you for your gas. Don't care actually. Same thing about your time. Don't know and don't care.

You seem to have an axe to grind. Sorry your purchases haven't worked out for you though.

KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE usually refers to an error writing to memory that is read-only. It's often cured by a reformat of the disk the main OS kernel is installed on, but I doubt a restore even goes that deep.

If a DFU restore didn't work, unfortunately I think your only option is to get a return as it seems the storage media is, well, screwed, sorry buddy.

while i realize that it's a pain to try and return defective products (and all manufactures have bad items making it into the public's hands) why bash apple for a a few bad ipads? (and i also realize that by a few i'm talking thousands out of millions and unfortunately you've received 2 of those thousands) they are the most liberal of any company i've ever dealt with for returns

most people don't cruise forums unless they're looking for techie material or for fixes to issues they're having so it seems that more people are having issues than there really are...

take or send it back, apple will make it right (unlike others) and if you're still not satisfied vote with your wallet and go buy from another manufacturer

Dude, I've had all 3 iPads and have dozens of friends and family with them and have been hanging out on iPad forums since day one, and this is literally the first time I've ever heard of anything like this on a non-jailbroken iPad.

So, you can go on all you want about this being a known problem that a lot of people are having, but it's obviously not.

I'm not suggesting you aren't having this problem, but that is highly unusual and you should get that unit replaced as it's obviously defective.

Jailbreak iPad 2 here and almost every time I put the ipad to sleep springboard crashes. Doesn't happen on a stock iOS with no JB.

You guys think maybe his NAND Flash (controller) is failing? Just a thought. ;)

I think his attitude is failing..probably a troll

Because only trolls have problems with apple products... right?

Have any of you stopped to think for a second that the reason so many come in here with problems (be they big or small) and then turn upset and angry, is in fact, because so many of you are just arrogant asses.

Who would rather to bloat about how no one has ever had any trouble with their products, than help... and the only explanation for the OP's problems is he/she is obviously a troll... so there is no real problem.

You sir deserve a gold star and a steak dinner! :)

Thank you for rising above the fray and addressing my problem...

I would wipe it and set it up fresh as a new iPad on a computer different from the one you set it up with this time. Who knows what dodgy bits of code you could be harboring from previous restores and/or jailbreaks (I assume you have jailbroken at some point, since you call it a springboard).

No its never been jail broken, thats whats odd... as most folks who have this problem have it on jailbroken units.

This is a replacement unit for an iPad that died completely after 6 weeks of lite usage.

I only have one computer to access for restores...

I'll be taking this one back to the Apple store this weekend... and simply asking for an new unit.

Not one that was returned and "repaired", then placed back into stock to be given to the next sucker in line...

I hate to resurrect an olds thread but my iPad 3, never JB and running iOS 5.1.1 has been suffereing from Springboard crashes. The only time I notice it is if I do a shutdown with assistive touch running and then doing a cold boot start. That's when it happens as I notice Assistive Touch is not visible on the screen and I have to go into settings and disable and then reenable it.

I then check the diagnostics log and it shows that a Springboard crash took place. I have down several clean installs and the problem is still there.

Any ideas what might be causing my problem or suggestions?

How did you manage clean installs without upgrading iOS?
