OK so I run my os on an external USB 3.0 ssd. On imac late 2015 Had big sur no problem.
Except whenever I try this damn new os version my imac. It's extremely painfully slow witch beachballs. It's unusable.....
What's going on? Is this new version messes with booting from external ssd?

I am just having a feeling its not a preview problem. I remember mojave got released with a very similar issue.
So I am just trying to see if there is a fix for that or a workaround to basically have and idea if i should give up on that whole new update.
its pretty strange, as if the OS is not really having a fast connection to the SSD over USB 3.0, and it acts as if it constantly stops accessing the drive at all, thats while i get beachballs. I am not sure what is that. I did SMC reset and NVRAM reset and all that, and still no dice.

Can you file a bug report with Apple?

Are you sure you haven't changed the cable, or the USB hub, or the USB port lately?

I had a late 2025 iMac, the main problem is that you have way slower I/O to content with using a external USB-3 external SSD, and at this late stage swapping the internal HDD with a internal SATA SDD is not worth it.
  • Four USB 3 ports (compatible with USB 2)
  • Two Thunderbolt 2 ports
The iMac with 2017 started to get Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 (10Gb) I/O.

Monterey is a bit larger OS to load. It does more disk security authentication of the disk requiring the admin to install the last three betas. I actually got b6 to boot slowly with a HDD for comparison.

Are you using more then 8GB RAM? Did you opt out of disk encryption?

You might try running Black Magic Speed Test to see how fast your external SSD is once booted and running. :)

I gave up, its was just too painfully slow, i think there is a bug with usb 3.0 and external drives, or some of them. so the stubborn me, cracked open the external ssd and mounted it internally to be able to wing it lol.
