I'm not the guy who usually forgets his chargers, I own several of them in different locations just so that I don't run out of juice when it's needed, but yesterday morning was a bit different.

I thought that I'm leaving home for a short business trip, planned to be back until evening that day, but it took an unexpected turn and here I am, 150 km from my place, tied to the current task for another 36 hours.

This wasn't the initial plan, so I had the messenger bag filled with my day to day tech; a fully charged Nintendo Switch (god I love the new Super Mario), private iPhone 8, companies Note 8 and the Bose QC 35 on my neck.

Now, the thing is, everything was fully charged except for the MBP 2016 which was on 30%, I figured out that most of the tech was fine since the trip should not take more than half a day, so I only took the MBP charger with me, it's small and light, fit's into the pocket of the coat so it's not a big deal. Most of the other stuff can wait, at least that's what I thought.

Later on, one thing lead to another and I was stuck 150km away from most of my chargers, except for the MBP one. And the thing is, I don't know why, but I never took USB C seriously and I didn't give it too much of attention, until a few hours ago when my Switch was dead and all the phones on 20-30%, with another day and a half to go.

At first I started to panic, but then I figured out that I can charge most of the important stuff with the MBP charger. First, the device for which the charger is meant to be, the MBP, after that charged the Note 8 (blasphemy, I know), so that I can continue the work, and after that the little Switch just for the sake of having more fun with the stupid cap. And then it struck me, I couldn't believe how convenient and fast it was to just connect and charge my tech, but it was a pity that I couldn't charge everything.

Now, I'm not holding any grudges against the Bose QC 35, they are an "old" model and newer bt headphones with USB C are slowly entering the market, but the problem was my one month old iPhone 8 which I love, but can't use with the new standard.

A few days ago I had a read over at the MBP 2018 thread where people complained about the USB C, mentioned HDMI and some other ports which are "the standard", but after this situation I'm all up for USB C, a bit disappointed with the Lightning port, but am definitely looking forward to the future iPhones with USB C.

But, at this point, I'm asking myself why didn't they change the port on the X and on the new Beats, it would make so much sense for the device with the slogan "future of phones" to have it, together with the high end headphones from Beats.

A bit confused but hopefully they will change it in the near future...

Apple controls lightning. No-one controls USB C (there are standards, but there's no-one giving out a certificate to say "this cable is good enough for X). If you fry your iPhone with a dodgy USB C charger you'll still try and blame Apple - but with a dodgy lightning cable/charger they can easily show you what to look for (MFI certification). Also if you remember the people who were up in arms about them changing the port to lightning - having to deal with all that again isn't fun. Of course money comes into this, but it's not the only reason.

Personally I just have a lightning to USB C cable which goes everywhere with the MacBook brick I have to charge my iPhone and iPad - this isn't inconvenient and it works.

This. I do exactly the same when on business trips. Super convenient and reduces the amount of chargers or dongles I need to carry with me. Plus it slows for super fast charging of both my iPad Pro and iPhone.

Personally I think Apple sees the future of charging as wireless hence the introduction of QI and their pad in a few months. Especially as they expand on their wireless devices business (headphones, watch, phone and who knows what next). The lightning port is here to stay and possibly some time in the future will be dropped completely.

Is the USB-C situation all settled yet, though? Just last year when I got my first usb-c phone, the HTC-10, there were all these warnings not to use one manufacturer’s charger with another manufacturer’s phone even though both are usb-c connectors. And even now the USB-C headphones aren’t necessarily cross compatible across brands. I remain confused about exactly how “standard” this new standard is.

Lightning has a rather sizable head start and high availability. It’s also an additional revenue stream for Apple.

Although it’s ignorant that if you buy a new MacBook and new iPhone they can’t connect without an additional dongle

Apple really needs to get their uniformity under control. They are a very confused company. They really need to start getting their design teams in the same room.

Thats a lot of words for just saying you forgot your lighting cable at home.
Beats isn't "high end".
Also, apple isn't pushing beats really(besides the one with the W1 chip). They want people to buy their bluetooth earbuds.
Im not really sure I ever see them going usb-c for their phones. Its slightly larger than lighting which will limit the thinness of the phone to a point(even though the last 2 years they have been getting thicker).

Yes I had the same experience as the OP and wish so much usb c would be more widespread by now.

I have so many apple devices that lightning vs usb c is not even the main issue, but other devices Sith proprietary USB ports line usb mini and micro etc are the main culprit! So I always have to bring usb c for my MacBook and power bank, then several lightning cables, and then also camera and bose QC35 charging usb mini cables. SOOOO annoying!

USB-C is not much larger than Lightning. Since phones are getting thicker and heavier, its size shouldn't matter.

Still doesn't make sense MacBook Pro still has headphone jack, uses USB-C like other Androids, and barely added Touch ID but iPhones still use Lightning, removed headphone jack, and X removed Touch ID for Face ID.

Apple was supposed to be about simplicity. Consistency. Minimalism. Easy to use. Not this...

Market is too large for Lightning. USBC brings nothing new to the table, except a lrger bulkier plug. Industry was slow and late with a worse solution...

Yup, it sucks.

I actually didn't know this, but now it makes sense. That aside, I'm hoping that most of the hotels will implement the Qi furniture within the next two years so that at least the cables are not an issue anymore.

Yup, it sucks.

Not true anymore. USB-C allows for faster charging and that’s actually a big deal.

Further, competitor devices are thinner and lighter and use USB-C.

All the new iPhones and iPads would greatly benefit from switching to USB-C.

Larger bulkier plug? Way to exaggerate.

When the iPhone 5 came out, Apple said that lightning would be the standard for the next 10 years. While USB C is great, there’s a ton of Apple products that are stuck on lightning (Magic Mouse/Keyboard/Trackpad, AirPods, Apple TV remote, etc.) and will probably be that way for a while.

QI furniture is great as long as you don't need to use your device. Gimme a cord every time.

Apple fans for MacBook Pro going only USB-C: Yea, this is great. The future. Apple is pushing the envelope for a superior hub. USB-A might br bigger market but this change will make USB-C the future.

Apple fans for iPhone: Yea, USB-C just does not have a big enough market like lightning. What benfits does it bring? No need. USB-C is not the future.

At the minimum, they should have included a USB-C brick, and USB-C to lightning cable with the new iPhones

Not all USB-C cables are created equal.

Neither are Lightning cables, for that matter, but at least Apple has the MFi standard

Not sure if USB-C has any type of standard like that.
