I kid you not a coworker unlocked my X with his face today

My X has not been consistent with Face ID. When I compare it to how consistent it works on my daughters X it fails way too much.

Today a coworker wanted to check out my phone. He picked it up and started touching the screen and I kid you not he unlocked it. Even he was really surprised.

I need to take it back and exchange it.

Were you standing close by? The camera might’ve “seen” you.

If your FaceID hasn't been consistent, go through the process again. Unless your coworker looks a lot like you, he shouldn't have been able to do that.

You didn't turn off "Require Attention" under Face ID settings did you?

I was close but he never pointed it anywhere near me. I suppose there is a chance it saw me but I don’t think it did.

weird.. and you tried to recreate the occurrence?

First, I would recommend resetting Face ID, and setting it up again, and see if your co-worker can get in..
Not sure Apple would replace the entire phone (maybe if you took your co-worker to the genius appt with you.)
Even then, they may want to restore your iPhone, as they may see it as a software fault..

Did he try to unlock repeatedly, while entering your password between tries?

The Indian brothers showed how FaceID learns faces if you enter your PW.

You should see if he can unlock it when you're not anywhere near the front of the phone. eg. you can only see the back of the phone. Hand it to him 'off', and only ever have the back of the phone facing you.

I'm with the other guy, I'd suspect the phone was picking up on your face and unlocking it.
