Alright just got the phone!
Every other year I typically go and just buy the phone flat out at the Apple store as I need my phone to be unlocked...

This year, during the launch I am in a major city... No luck for store pickup.
So I had to result in getting it thru Best Buy, never done this before. They offered the ATT next payment plan or something, why not, less money upfront, I will unlock it myself prior to my next trip.

I always look at the model of the phone I get, on the I7 i had to made sure it was the verizon version as it was CDMA capable. this year it looks like it doesnt matter. But old habits die hard, so I check and to my surprise, i got the Model: MT992LL/A! it appears that this is the unlocked version! the ATT version is Model: MT902LL/A.

So what do you guys think? I got lucky? I should test it with another carrier's sim. I just dont have one handy right this moment.

LOL. It's locked to AT&T the second you put your SIM in. I believe that there is only one US model this year anyway. The phones they get are unlocked but as soon as they scan it into their system it's the ol' BB locker-oo. I paid full price for a 7 a couple of years ago and was locked to T-Mobile. Even after paying full price. Needless to say I don't buy phones from BB anymore.

Bummer... I was just excited.
I actually did not put in the sim that was provided to me, used my old one...
Now I wanna try with another sim!

Best Buy typically sells the sim-free/unlocked version. Has been the same last year. The only problem is that Best Buy as the reseller-flex policy meaning, if you stick a sim card other than Verizon, it will lock itself after you activate it. I think Verizon changed this policy to so it may lock as well (I know Verizon has changed this policy).

Can you get T-Mobile to unlock it if you have no bill payments left with them?

Man...
Now I got to try! I am actually with ATT. When I bought the I7 i picked the Verizon version because it had CDMA and i still used it and activated it with a ATT sim as soon as i got it.

Always suggested to remove the included SIM before turning it on to for the first time to hopefully avoid carrier locking it. Instead, try an already activated SIM from a different carrier.

Same applies to, for example, Verizon prepaid phones. If you remove the bundled SIM you can buy and use a carrier unlock code otherwise you're Verizon carrier locked.
