but then I saw the macbook and new macbook pro next to it and I ended up not getting anything. Apple you did it to me again. It was hard to pull the trigger on the air when the macbook/macbookpro's screens are so nice in comparison. I was surprised that I even liked the newer style keyboard. This would be my second laptop used mostly for programming, some media so I'm in a state of confusion. The non tb macbook pro is on sale for $1299 which was the same price for the rmb. What would you guys do? My main machine is a windows laptop mind you.

I chose the MBA @ BB for $850 because of ports SD card and portability, screen is a trade off

Edit price match $799

I see getting a mac for two reasons... macOS and Apple's hardware designs. A $799 MacBook Air as a great way to get into the macOS world for fairly low cost. But it's an aging hardware design... that has seen no love from Apple in 5 years. But it's macOS... for about as cheap as you can get it!

But if you want a Mac more for the quality hardware and cutting edge design... well then the MBA starts to look worse and those shiny new systems look more appealing. And Apple are experts at pricing upgrades just at the point where if you spend another $100 you can get something really better.

If I needed a retina screen I'd probably get 2015 model MacBook Pro... still has the ports I would use. I think I'm still 3 years away from this usb-c future of the MacBook.

For me it was my 1st entry level purchase thought about a high end pro for a while just not ready to drop $2,500 the the upper scale

I bought the MBA because I wanted to use it as a desktop connected to a monitor 99% of the time. I only use it as intended when I go on vacation or some place like Starbucks.

I started with a refurb retina Macbook 2016 m3, that then became a new rMB12-2016 m3 due to a UPS issue, at the same refurb price.

I did try an Air a few years back. It was great, super lightweight, great battery life.

This rMB is better.

I know what you mean. After going without a Mac for a while (iPad Pro as main machine) I picked up a 2013 MacBook Air for work and I just couldn't deal with the screen. I'd recommend a used or refurbished 2015 rMBP. You can literally find them half price of what they cost new and they are an amazing value with ports, good battery life, and a better keyboard imo.

Yeah I hear you. I am still using my mid 2012 MBA because it does everything I need and more. But I am tempted every time to make a jump.

Congrats on the new purchase! I had the Air for year, and would cringe switching between its bland display and the iPad's retina.

If you were prepared to get the Air, I'd go for the 13" nTB MacBook Pro since it's the same weight and is a bit more powerful. I like the 12" MacBook, but if you don't mind the extra weight you get a little more bang for the buck on the 13".

I bought the 15" MBP with Touch Bar after promising myself a new machine for ages. The Touch Bar is very limited but everything else is truly amazing. 13" isn't as big as I'd like an but for $800 it's worth every penny. Congrats.
